We feature another insightful study from Legacy: The Scientific Publication of the Department of Human and Family Development Studies — “From the Filipinos and for the Filipinos.”
The article “Gratitude, Materialism, and Sustainable Consumption Behaviors among Filipino Young Adults: A Mediation Analysis” explores how gratitude and materialistic values influence sustainable consumption behaviors among Filipino youth. Findings show that higher gratitude is associated with lower materialism, which in turn is linked to more environmentally responsible consumption. The study highlights gratitude as a protective factor against consumerism and a potential pathway toward more sustainable lifestyles.
Authored by Julia May L. Benavente, Nephtaly Joel B. Botor, Helga P. Vergara, Michelle C. Merca, and Sarah Jen C. Paccarangan, this research emphasizes the importance of values formation and sustainability-oriented programs in shaping responsible behaviors among young Filipinos.

Feeding children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often involves unique challenges and everyday adjustments within the family setting. In the latest issue of the Asia-Pacific Journal of Human Development and Family Studies (AHEAD), the study “Caregivers’ Experiences in Feeding Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Qualitative Study” explores the lived experiences of Filipino caregivers in supporting the feeding practices of children with ASD.
Authored by Daniela V. Sagum, Aileen R. de Juras, and Anna Teresa O. Orillo from the Institute of Human Nutrition and Food, College of Human Ecology, University of the Philippines Los Baños, the study highlights food selectivity, mealtime behaviors, caregiving approaches, and the important roles of extended family members, therapy services, and SPED schools in supporting children with ASD.
The findings emphasize the value of culturally grounded caregiving practices and stronger family-school collaboration in improving developmental and nutritional outcomes for children with ASD.
