PLANTING THE SEEDS OF SELF-SUFFICIENCY: DA-QARES AND BPI-LOS BAÑOS LAUNCH MUNGBEAN UPSCALING INITIATIVE

On May 12, 2026, Bureau of Plant Industry - Los Baños NCRDPSC, in coordination with the Department of Agriculture - Quezon Agricultural Research and Experiment Station (DA-QARES) successfully established a one-hectare mungbean production showcasing the high-yielding Pagasa 7 variety for the project titled “Upscaling of Technology for Mungbean Production”. This activity was actively participated by the BPI-LB Mungbean Team headed by Dr. Joel L. Adorada for the government's hands-on commitment to agricultural development. This collaborative initiative is designed to modernize domestic production and reduce national dependency on imported legumes. By establishing structured and science-based local production systems, the project aims to stabilize the domestic supply chain and integrate local yields directly into the industrial processing market.
Beyond local seed production, the project will also supply higher class seeds to local government units, agricultural cooperatives, and private processors to strengthen regional economic stability. Ultimately, this collaborative framework transitions traditional mungbean farming into a modernized and self-reliant agricultural sub-sector that reinforces national food security.
