Adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on December 11, 2011 through Resolution 66/170, the International Day of the Girl Child was declared to recognize the rights of girls and the unique challenges that they face around the world. It highlights the need to address these challenges to promote empowerment and the fulfilment of their human rights.
As young girls mature into women, it is important that they have access to support and resources that allow them to live safe, educated, healthy, and fulfilling lives. However, several issues such as discrimination, adolescent pregnancy, and child marriage among others prevent girls from reaching their potentials. That is why the International Day of the Girl Child reminds and encourages us to stand with girls and advocate for their rights.
Similarly, DOST CALABARZON shows support for girls in several ways. Our Scholarship program provides girls and young women with opportunities to enter the field of Science and Technology without barriers, and contribute to national development through their passion, grit, and intellect. Girls also are indirect beneficiaries of our assistive programs such as SETUP and CEST; families who received technical assistance, trainings, and grants were able to improve their quality of lives, and the young girls in these communities can enjoy the benefits as well. We at DOST CALABARZON remain committed to providing relevant S&T services to improve the lives of Filipino girls and, ultimately, the Filipino people.
This International Day of the Girl Child, let us continue to support young girls by advocating for their rights, breaking down barriers to their development, and encouraging girls to keep aspiring for the woman that they want to become ๐ฉโ๐ฌโจ
