Happy 2026! The UPLB Wild team is one with the celebration of this year's World Wildlife Day with the theme "Medicinal and Aromatic Plants: Conserving Health, Heritage and Livelihoodsโ€. This year's theme highlights the importance of wildlife, specifically medicinal and aromatic plants.

The use of wildlife, especially plants, has long been ingrained in our history. Let us never forget to celebrate but most importantly protect these precious resources in our land!

The holiday season is a time for family gatherings and celebration. Just like this group of juvenile Asian glossy starlings (๐˜ˆ๐˜ฑ๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ช๐˜ด ๐˜ฑ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ข๐˜บ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ด) observed perching on an electric wire.

๐‹๐Ž๐Ž๐Š: A crested myna (๐˜ˆ๐˜ค๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฅ๐˜ฐ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด ๐˜ค๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜ถ๐˜ด) on the back of a domestic cow. The same bird is observed perching on a tree. The crested myna is a member of the Sturnidae family, known for their complex vocalizations including mimicking.

The crested myna is omnivorous, consuming food including worms, grubs, grains, and fruit. It is an introduced species in the Philippines and can be found in rural and urban areas.

Meet our wintering visitors, the Chinese Sparrowhawk (๐˜›๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ฉ๐˜บ๐˜ด๐˜ฑ๐˜ช๐˜ป๐˜ข ๐˜ด๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ด). During winter, this raptor passes through the Philippines and Indonesia, and also throughout the rest of Southeast Asia.

Take a look at this Philippine pygmy woodpecker (๐˜‹๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ค๐˜ฐ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฐ๐˜ด ๐˜ฎ๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ถ๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ถ๐˜ด) munching on its meal. Aside from being known to drill on trees, woodpeckers actually have long sticky tongues used to sn**ch insects and larvae from tree crevices. This endemic woodpecker species is the smallest in the Philippines!

Take a look at this specimen of the Luzon keelback (๐˜›๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฑ๐˜ช๐˜ฅ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ด ๐˜ด๐˜ฑ๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜จ๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ), and observe the details of its scales. Keelbacks are named so because of its distinct, raised longitudinal ridge known as ๐—ธ๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—น๐˜€, on each individual scale. This particular species is found only in Luzon!

Yesterday, on the 4th of December, the international community celebrated the World Wildlife Conservation Day. The celebration highlights the importance of wildlife and the protection of threatened species, along with the call for raising awareness of the rising decline of wildlife species.

๐‹๐Ž๐Ž๐Š: A Philippine Magpie-robin (๐˜Š๐˜ฐ๐˜ฑ๐˜ด๐˜บ๐˜ค๐˜ฉ๐˜ถ๐˜ด ๐˜ฎ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ด) or locally known as Siloy or Asosiloy, spotted the ISH, UPLB. This Philippine-endemic bird species can be found throughout the country except in Palawan. It is can be found a variety of habitats, from lowland to mid-montane elevations. It is known to feed on insects, small vertebrates, seeds, and fruits.
