DON'T YOU KNOW??

Burning fossil fuels like coal damages the environment because it releases massive amounts of carbon dioxide, toxic gases, and heavy metals that drive climate change, pollute air and water, and harm human health. Coal is the dirtiest fossil fuel, producing more CO₂ per unit of electricity than oil or gas, and its impacts are felt globally and locally, including in the Philippines.

Key Environmental Damages from Coal

- Climate Change
- Coal is the largest source of CO₂ emissions among fossil fuels.
- Burning 1 kWh of coal-based electricity emits about 2.3 pounds of CO₂, nearly double that of natural gas.
- CO₂ traps heat for centuries, causing global warming, sea level rise, and extreme weather.

- Air Pollution
- Releases sulfur dioxide (SO₂) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), which form acid rain that damages forests, soils, and aquatic life.
- Produces fine particulate matter (PM2.5) that penetrates lungs, leading to asthma, heart disease, and premature death.
- Contributes to smog and ground-level ozone, worsening respiratory illnesses.

- Toxic Metals
- Coal plants emit mercury, which transforms into methylmercury in water.
- This contaminates fish and bioaccumulates in the food chain, posing risks to pregnant women and children.

- Water Pollution
- Coal ash and waste contaminate rivers and groundwater with arsenic, lead, and cadmium.
- Mining operations deplete and pollute water supplies, affecting communities downstream.

- Land Degradation
- Coal mining destroys landscapes, forests, and biodiversity.
- Open-pit mining and abandoned sites leave behind toxic residues and unsafe land.

⚖️ Risks & Trade-offs

- Global impact: Fossil fuel burning accounts for over 75% of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide.
- Local impact (Philippines): Coal plants contribute to air pollution in urban centers and threaten marine ecosystems through acid rain and mercury contamination.
- Health risks: Air pollution from coal is linked to millions of premature deaths globally each year.

✅ Why Shift to Renewables

- Cleaner energy: Solar, wind, and hydropower produce electricity without toxic emissions.
- Health benefits: Reduces respiratory diseases and improves air quality.
- Sustainability: Renewable sources are abundant and reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels.

🌱 PRACTICAL COMPOSTING & VERMICOMPOSTING FOR SUSTAINABLE WASTE DIVERSION ♻️

Turning biodegradable waste into a valuable resource—one compost at a time! 🌿

The Provincial Government of Southern Leyte, through the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Management Office (PENRMO), initiated the Practical Composting and Vermicomposting for Sustainable Waste Diversion, a complementary capacity-building activity in support of the implementation of the “Basura Mo, Abono Ko” Project.

The activity provided LGU and barangay MRF operators, MENRO staff, farmers, and community associations with practical, science-based knowledge and hands-on skills in composting and vermicomposting—helping communities transform biodegradable waste into valuable organic fertilizer while strengthening waste diversion efforts.

🤝 This initiative was made possible through the meaningful partnership with the Southern Leyte State University (SLSU) – Hinunangan Campus.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Ian A. Navarrete, Campus Director and Professor on Environmental Soil Science, together with the dedicated faculty and staff of SLSU–Hinunangan Campus, for their extended support, technical expertise, and commitment in equipping our participants with practical knowledge that can be applied in their respective communities.

Your willingness to share the expertise and resources of the academe strengthens the Province's efforts to promote sustainable waste management, resource recovery, and environmental stewardship.

🌿 From basura to abono.
♻️ From waste to resource.
🌱 From learning to action.

Together, let us continue working toward a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable Southern Leyte—where biodegradable waste is not simply discarded, but transformed into something that gives back to our soil and our communities.

Basura Mo, Abono Ko! 🌱♻️
Para sa Mas Malinis at Mas Luntiang Southern Leyte!

PENRMO | ABAG (Assist, Build and Green Initiative) LGU Project & "Basura Mo, Abono Ko" Waste Diversion Project

♻️ Strengthening Sustainable Waste Management Through Strategic LGU Partnerships

As part of the Provincial Government of Southern Leyte's commitment to advancing sustainable environmental governance, counterpart funding was recently awarded last August 3, 2026, under the ABAG (Assist, Build and Green Initiative) LGU Project to support local government units in implementing key solid waste management programs.

Through this initiative, the Municipalities of Malitbog and Sogod received counterpart funding amounting to two million nine hundred fifty thousand (₱2,950,000), for the establishment of their Sanitary Landfills (SLFs)—a vital investment in ensuring the environmentally sound disposal of residual wastes and the protection of public health and natural resources.

The establishment of sanitary landfills is a significant requirement under Republic Act No. 9003, otherwise known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, which mandates every local government unit to adopt an ecological solid waste management system and transition away from environmentally unsafe open dumpsites. A sanitary landfill serves as the final disposal facility for residual wastes that cannot be reduced, reused, recycled, or composted, making it an essential component of an effective solid waste management program. However, developing a sanitary landfill is not merely about constructing a disposal facility. LGUs must comply with stringent environmental, engineering, and regulatory criteria, including proper site selection, environmental safeguards, technical design standards, and the necessary permits and clearances from concerned national government agencies. These measures ensure that the facility protects groundwater, nearby communities, and the environment while operating in accordance with national laws and environmental standards.

Likewise, the Municipality of Liloan and Hinunangan was awarded counterpart funding amounting to six hundred eighty thousand (₱680,000) for the implementation of the "Basura Mo, Abono Ko" Waste Diversion Project, an innovative initiative that transforms biodegradable wastes into nutrient-rich organic fertilizers. By diverting biodegradable waste from disposal facilities and converting it into valuable agricultural inputs, the project supports waste reduction, promotes a circular economy, enhances soil productivity, and contributes to more sustainable farming practices.

These initiatives underscore the Provincial Government's continuing commitment to assisting local government units in achieving full compliance with Republic Act No. 9003, strengthening environmental protection efforts, reducing waste generation, and building resilient and sustainable communities throughout Southern Leyte.

Together, through collaboration, innovation, and shared responsibility, we continue to pave the way toward a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable Southern Leyte.

Empowering LGUs. Advancing Ecological Solid Waste Management. Building a Greener Southern Leyte.
