A site assessment was conducted on October 21, 2026, at the YPC Workshop of YISEDA Producer Cooperative in Brgy. Lunas, Maasin City, to evaluate the proposed installation site for the finishing spray booth technology developed by the DOSTโ€“Forest Products Research and Development Institute (DOST-FPRDI).

FPRDI experts Engr. Edward Paul S. Marasigan and Mr. Rodell A. Papa assessed the site and provided technical recommendations on the necessary preparations for the installation and operation of the technology.

The finishing spray booth is designed to provide a designated workspace for applying paints, varnishes, and other finishing materials to bamboo products. It can help improve finishing quality and consistency while managing overspray and reducing workersโ€™ exposure to airborne particles and fumes when properly designed and operated.

Through Project BUILD (Bamboo Utilization and Innovation for Livelihood and Development through STI Interventions), this technology is expected to help YISEDA Producer Cooperative improve its production processes, enhance the quality and marketability of its bamboo products, and create opportunities for increased sales and livelihood generation.

SOGOD, SOUTHERN LEYTE โ€” In a major push to accelerate tech-driven entrepreneurship and local economic growth, key government agencies, academic institutions, and industry leaders gathered at the Southern Leyte State University Main Campus in Sogod, Southern Leyte, on October 15, 2026, for the Provincial Startup Ecosystem Mapping Activity.

Carrying the theme "Building Network, Empowering Startups. Driving Innovation for a Sustainable Southern Leyte," the whole-day event brought together core partners including the Department of Science and Technology - Provincial Science and Technology Office (DOST Southern Leyte), the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI Southern Leyte), the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT Southern Leyte), and the Southern Leyte State University (SLSU).

The conduct of this ecosystem mapping was initially agreed upon during the 3rd Quarter meeting of the Southern Leyte Provincial Science, Technology, and Innovation Council (SLPSTIC) on October 2, 2026, in Macrohon, Southern Leyte. Recognizing the need for an organized approach to identify startup opportunities, identify gaps, and align regional resources, SLPSTIC members spearheaded this landmark initiative.

Startup ecosystem mapping plays a pivotal role in transforming rural and provincial economies into vibrant innovation hubs. Its strategic importance includes identifying strengths and service gaps by mapping out local entrepreneurs, research assets, incubators, mentors, and investors to highlight existing strengths and reveal critical funding or infrastructure bottlenecks.

The event featured presentations, policy discussions, and interactive workshop sessions. Atty. Fidelis T. Aviรฑon, OIC-Provincial Director of DTI Southern Leyte, and Ms. Marian C. Go-Soco, Provincial Officer of DICT Southern Leyte, presented their respective agency programs tailored to empower local startups. Dr. Ramil T. Uy, Provincial Director of DOST Southern Leyte, discussed the role of technology commercialization in the linear model of technological innovation, while Mr. Emmanuel E. Lagdamen, Supervising Science Research Specialist of DOST Southern Leyte led the discussion on the startup ecosystem architecture. Participants actively engaged in hands-on sessions utilizing the Startup Mapping Canvas.

Through joint efforts centered on the core values of Innovate, Collaborate, and Elevate, Southern Leyte is positioning itself as a resilient and forward-looking hub for technological innovation and entrepreneurship in Eastern Visayas.

MAASIN CITY, Southern Leyte โ€” Driven by a commitment to improve motorcycle servicing and meet growing customer needs, JJR Motorcycle Parts and Accessories Shop, owned by Mr. Avelino E. Aleria, Jr., is taking an important step toward business development through its first availment of the Department of Science and Technology's (DOST) Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP).

Through this initiative, the enterprise seeks to modernize its operations and strengthen its motorcycle maintenance and repair services through the acquisition of a Tire Changer Machine, Fuel Injector, Diagnostic Scanner, Air Compressor, Motorcycle Engine Lifter, Hydraulic Jack, and Remapping Machine.

These technologies are expected to improve service efficiency, enhance diagnostic capabilities, and support more precise and convenient motorcycle maintenance and repair procedures. The Tire Changer Machine will facilitate tire replacement, while the Fuel Injector and Diagnostic Scanner will support fuel system servicing and engine diagnostics. Meanwhile, the Air Compressor, Motorcycle Engine Lifter, Hydraulic Jack, and Remapping Machine will provide additional capabilities for workshop operations and electronic engine tuning, subject to motorcycle compatibility.

For Mr. Aleria, this first SETUP availment represents more than an investment in equipment. It is an opportunity to improve existing practices, expand service offerings, and build a stronger foundation for sustainable business growth. By adopting appropriate technologies, the enterprise aims to accommodate a wider range of customer needs, improve turnaround time, and deliver more reliable motorcycle servicing.

Beyond improving business operations, the intervention may also contribute to local economic activity through increased customer reach, stronger business performance, and potential employment opportunities as demand for services grows.

For DOST Eastern Visayas, the initiative highlights the role of SETUP in empowering micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) through appropriate science, technology, and innovation interventions. By helping local businesses adopt technologies suited to their needs, the program supports improved productivity, competitiveness, and sustainable enterprise development.

As JJR Motorcycle Parts and Accessories Shop begins its first SETUP journey, it demonstrates how a willingness to embrace innovation can open new opportunities for growth. Through the planned technology upgrading, the enterprise is working toward more efficient operations, expanded technical capabilities, and better service for motorcycle owners in the community.

With this initial step, JJR Motorcycle Parts and Accessories Shop is positioning itself for a more competitive future, demonstrating how science and technology can help local enterprises strengthen their capabilities and pursue sustainable growth.
