Germany’s academic scene just got a major upgrade 🎓🇩🇪

🏛 Meet the newly selected Universities of Excellence and research alliances: the University of Freiburg, Friedrich Schiller University Jena, the University of Cologne, Rhine-Main Universities, and Ruhr Innovation Lab.

📖 From 2027, these five institutions will join ten continuing Universities of Excellence and consortia in Germany’s funding programme. It’s a big moment for the country’s research landscape—and a reason to put Germany on your study and research radar.

🌐 What does “Excellence” mean? It means long-term support to strengthen research, teaching, infrastructure, and international connections. For students and researchers, that could mean more opportunities to take part in ambitious research, connect across disciplines, and collaborate with partners around the world.

🌏 COP31 is pulling up in Antalya this November, but the road there runs through the Pacific. Fiji, Tuvalu and Australia are hosting the Pre-COP, bringing Pacific perspectives into the lead-up to the global climate talks.

🌱 So, what does climate action look like beyond the summit stage? One part of the answer is 🇩🇪Germany’s International Climate Initiative, or . Since 2008, it has backed more than 1,100 climate and biodiversity projects around the world. In 2026, 🇩🇪Germany allocated €635 million to the initiative.

🗺️🪸 Across the Indo-Pacific, that support can mean work on clean energy transitions, climate resilience, forests, wetlands and coral reefs. The region’s climate needs are diverse, so local partnerships help shape projects around different places and priorities.

We are pleased to take part in the recently held events organized by GIZ Philippines and the Pacific Island Countries that brought together Germany’s partners in the International Climate Initiative ( ) in the country 🌳. Friends and partners came together to share experiences and fresh ideas, strengthen partnerships, and plan for future opportunities for a sustainable future. 🤝 💡

Through the IKI, Germany 🇩🇪 has been supporting climate action and biodiversity initiatives in the Philippines 🇵🇭 for almost two decades 🌱🐠. While much remains to be done to protect our climate, Ambassador Dr. Andreas Pfaffernoschke in his remarks praised the longstanding collaboration with Philippine partners that seeks to translate national climate action commitments into effective action on the ground. 🌏👨🏼‍🌾👩🏻‍🔬

THE PHILIPPINES IS BACK AT THE FRANKFURT BOOK FAIR 2026

After its historic season as the 2025 Guest of Honour at the prestigious Frankfurter Buchmesse, the Philippines is returning with a total of 182 locally-authored titles ripe for rights selling.

The annual fair kicks off today in Frankfurt, Germany, and will run until October 11. This year’s edition is seeing 4,350 exhibitors from over a hundred countries.

The Philippines is represented by delegates from nine prominent publishing houses, as well as key personnel from the National Book Development Board and the Department of Education.

Continuous participation in the fair means strengthening business ties with book distributors overseas and raising efforts to sell Filipino stories, whether in terms of our books getting translated into other languages or scoring adaptations into theatre, film, television, or games.

Democracy cannot be taken for granted. It must be safeguarded and practised anew every day.

Germany has experienced this first-hand throughout its history; its first democracy was established in 1919. However, it came to an end in 1933. This was followed by a period of dictatorship, war and the division of Germany, symbolised by the Berlin Wall. Places such as Niederkirchnerstrasse in Berlin serve as a reminder of this history.

In 1990, 36 years ago, reunification was achieved through free elections. This was driven by the peaceful revolution of the people in the GDR and made possible by international diplomacy.
