𝗙𝗜𝗡𝗔𝗟𝗟𝗬: 𝗘𝗡𝗥𝗜𝗟𝗘 𝗗𝗜𝗘𝗦 𝗔𝗙𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝗔 𝗖𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗬 𝗢𝗙 𝗖𝗢𝗥𝗥𝗨𝗣𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗢𝗣𝗣𝗢𝗥𝗧𝗨𝗡𝗜𝗦𝗠

Proving some truth to the Filipino saying "ang masamang damo, matagal mamatay", Juan Ponce F. Enrile finally died today, November 13, 2025, at 101 years old after a lifetime of corruption and political opportunism.

Enrile was born to the mistress of married politician Alfonso Ponce Enrile on February 14, 1924, 2 years before the birth of the late Queen Elizabeth II and 11 years before the creation of the Philippine Commonwealth and the presidency of Manuel L. Quezon. The first four decades of his life were known mainly for his high Bar scores, academic achievements, and law professorship—until 1964, when he took over the personal legal affairs of a corrupt Senator named Ferdinand Emmanuel E. Marcos.

When Marcos was elected President in 1965, Enrile was rewarded with an appointment as chief of the Bureau of Customs and Insurance Commissioner. Marcos later appointed him to the Department of Finance, Department of Justice, and—in 1970—as Secretary (later Minister) of National Defense, in which capacity he would become Martial Law Administrator.

Enrile oversaw the implementation of the darkest 14 years in Philippine history—the Marcos Dictatorship—with at least 3,257 recorded extrajudicial killings (EJKs), 35,000 documented tortures, 737 forced disappearances, and 70,000 imprisoned. No future period (to date) would come close in atrocities until the 30,000+ mass murders of the Duterte regime from 2016-2022.

Ever the political chameleon and opportunist, Enrile would turn against his mentor Marcos in 1986, after serving him loyally for two decades. With Marcos already on the losing side as mass protests and defecting allies both local and overseas, Enrile joined General Fidel V. Ramos as the catalysts of the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution.

Enrile would avoid any punishment for his crimes during Martial Law, bending with political winds during successive presidencies, and even becoming Senate President. The closest he came to facing justice while alive was when he was imprisoned under the PNoy administration following Enrile's involvement in the 2013 PDAF Scam with Janet Napoles—only to get away once again after being allowed to get out of jail acquitted in 2024 by the Sandiganbayan, where a majority of sitting justices were Duterte appointees.

In 2019, Enrile, barely able to walk, ran for the Senate and lost. He returned to government one last time following his 2022 appointment as Bongbong Marcos' Chief Presidential Legal Counsel, eventually dying in office. May he face justice for all his crimes in the afterlife, as he looks up at the country he exploited for generations.

𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐇𝐔𝐌𝐁𝐋𝐄 𝐏𝐎𝐏𝐄: 𝐂𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐃𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐞, 𝐋𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝

, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, passed away earlier today at 88 years old. He was the first Pope from Latin America, the western hemisphere, and the Jesuits. As of writing, the cause of his death has not yet been officially disclosed, although it follows several months battling pneumonia.

Bergoglio began his working life as a bouncer, janitor, and chemical technician. He joined the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in 1960 and was ordained as a priest in 1969.

During the Argentinian military dictatorship known as the Dirty War, Bergoglio — now a Jesuit superior — covertly sheltered people from the dictatorship using church resources, similar to priests who resisted Marcos Sr.'s Martial Law in the Philippines.

As Archbishop of Buenos Aires from 1997 onwards, Bergoglio doubled the number of priests assigned to the city's slums and ended the local church's extravagant spending habits. In 2001, he was made a Cardinal by Pope John Paul II. Cardinal Bergoglio continued living a simple lifestyle, preferring a small apartment instead of a luxurious official residence, using public transport, and cooking his own meals. Bergoglio would eventually be elected Pope in 2013, naming himself after Saint Francis of Assisi.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 '𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲' 𝗣𝗼𝗽𝗲

Pope Francis pursued a more progressive, reform-oriented Papacy compared to his predecessors; he welcomed past critics of the Vatican into his advisers, pushed for the worldwide abolition of the death penalty, appointed women as church officials, called for action on climate change, and criticized corporate greed and capitalism.

He also called for kindness and compassion towards LGBTQ+ people and other marginalized groups. These actions, along with his focus on the poor, would earn him the anger of conservatives, traditionalists, and other similar closed-minded people.

In 2015, then-Presidential Candidate Rodrigo Duterte cursed Pope Francis: "Pope putangina ka, umuwi ka na." Duterte would not stop there, later calling God "stupid" and saying "kill those useless bishops", among many other unhinged rants against priests who criticized the Duterte regime's crimes.

Amidst Duterte's War on the Poor, in 2019, Duterte cursed Caloocan Bishop and CBCP Vice President Pablo Virgilio David after the bishop criticized the thousands of extrajudicial killings (EJKs) by Duterte's administration. Pope Francis personally consoled David, telling him "I want you to know that I know your situation. I know what you are going through. I am praying for you. Please continue."

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗢𝗹𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗙𝗼𝗿

Pope Francis was not a radical revolutionary, being closer to a centrist; he appointed women as church officials and decision-makers, but did not approve of ordaining them as priests. He approved blessings for same-sex couples, provided that they were not official endorsements of the marriage itself. He changed church policy on the death penalty and nuclear weapons, but upheld it on abortion and maintained other conservative teachings.

Nonetheless, Pope Francis earned the respect and admiration of many outside Catholicism by pushing for a kinder, more compassionate, and more reasonable world, in a church where so many — including millions of Filipinos — revel in bigotry, hate, and anti-intellectualism.

Regardless of whether one is Catholic or not, Pope Francis had lessons for all of us. One of the most important was to have compassion for the poor, unlike Duterte supporters who celebrated the slaughter of tens of thousands of innocent Filipinos.

With his passing, another light dims from our world.
