Does the Sermon on the Mount replace the Law of God?
Some Christians view the Sermon on the Mount as a new βlaw of Christβ. They believe that this new βLaw of Christβ has replaced the βLaw of Godβ or the Ten Commandments. They say that a system of legalism was now replaced with a system of grace. Does Jesusβ law differ from the Law of God itself?
Is this a misconception about the Sermon on the Mount?
What do the following Biblical texts say about the law of God, and indirectly about the possibility of the Sermon on the Mount to replace the Ten Commandments:
β’ βDo not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.β (Matt. 5:17-19).
β’ βYou have heard that it was said to those of old, βYou shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment. But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause[a] shall be in danger of the judgment.β (Matt. 5:21-22). Jesus did not nullify one of these Commandments, but amplified it.
β’ βYou have heard that it was said to those of old, βYou shall not commit adultery.β But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.β (Matt. 5:27-28). Again our Savior amplifies yet another Commandment of God.
β’ βFor whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all. For He who said, βDo not commit adultery,β also said, βDo not murder.β Now if you do not commit adultery, but you do murder, you have become a transgressor of the law.β (James 2:10-11).
β’ βWhat shall we say then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! On
