Think of it as a seatbelt for workers at heights!

*Lanyard*
A vital component of safety harnesses:

- A short, strong strap connecting workers to anchor points
- Prevents falls or reduces their impact

Note: The term "lanyard" also refers to a cord used to hang items like ID cards around your neck.

This December, let us reflect on one of the most catastrophic incidents in the history of the process industry—the Bhopal disaster. It’s a reminder for senior leaders to lead by example and reinforce the pillars of inherently safer design, demonstrating unwavering commitment to safety.
𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐇𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐝?
40 years ago, on December 3, 1984, the chemical industry witnessed its darkest hour in Bhopal, India. A leak of methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas from a pesticide plant devastated a nearby shantytown, resulting in thousands of deaths and countless injuries.
The disaster was triggered by the contamination of an MIC storage tank with water and chloroform, leading to a runaway reaction. The temperature and pressure inside the tank skyrocketed, breaching containment and releasing toxic gas into the atmosphere.

Know the reactivity hazards of every material in your processes. Thoroughly review the reactivity sections of MSDSs, operating procedures, and the functionality of safety systems like interlocks, relief devices, and scrubbers.
𝐁𝐞𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫-𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐬
If a material reacts with water:
Exercise caution during maintenance activities like equipment cleaning.
Ensure compressed air is free from water before use, as condensed water can inadvertently cause reactions.
𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐄𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬
You can familiarize yourself with emergency response steps for scenarios in which temperature or pressure rises rapidly in vessels containing hazardous, reactive materials.
𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐬 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐭-𝐂𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐒𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐬
Encourage leadership and technical teams to discuss potential worst-case scenarios for your facility. Identify critical safeguards and ensure they are actively maintained to prevent such incidents.
