I have always approached the flag not as an endpoint of nationhood but as a civic symbol within an ongoing historical process that invites both respect and critical inquiry. Alvin Campomanes Historical Tours and Consulting joins the nation in the observance of National Flag Days (May 28 to June 12, 2026).

May we continue to honor the Philippines in whatever we do.

I found this photo of me conducting a tour of the Museo ni JosΓ© Rizal at Fort Santiago in 2010. This was taken 16 years ago. As is obvious from my physique, this was a loooong time ago, hehe.

Still, it brings back fond memories of my early years in public history and heritage interpretation β€” long before many of the engagements that would later become a regular part of my life and work.

Carlos β€œBotong” Francisco’s masterpiece used to be displayed near the old entrance of the museum, the doorway facing what is now Papa Kape. It’s interesting how museums evolve over time, and how even the curation itself becomes part of the history we remember.

I had the privilege of leading a whole-day private historical tour of Manila (Intramuros - National Museum of the Philippines - Rizal Park Luneta) for Nexo, a centralized finance platform based in Sofia, Bulgaria that helps people manage cryptocurrencies.

Sharing a tour review written by Mr. Petar Marinov, Training and Project Management Senior Team Lead of Nexo.

Last January, I received an inquiry from the University of the Philippines Third World Studies Center (UP-TWSC) if I could lead a historical tour of Intramuros for Grinnell College, a private liberal arts college in Iowa, United States of America.

Yesterday, I had the privilege of leading undergraduate students of Grinnell College who are taking the course β€œSPAM: Empire in a Can” (Latin American Studies and Sociology 195). Their course examines colonialism, empire, and their social and cultural legacies, requiring visits to former colonies of the US. The group visited Hawaii last month, and the historical tour that I conducted yesterday served as the culminating activity of their course.

They were joined by their professors: Dr. John Petrus (Associate Professor and Department Chair of Spanish), Dr. Sharon Quinsaat (Associate Professor and Department Chair of Peace and Conflict Studies), and Prof. Julia Lascol (Associate Director for Community-Engaged Learning).

UP TWSC researchers assisted us: Ms. Arriane Louis Fajardo, a former student of mine at UP Manila, and Mr. Jewel Christopher Politico.

I am proud and fulfilled that my tour forms part of an actual course offered at a US college.

Sharing more snapshots from a recent private historical tour that I led for professors of Miriam College and Camosun College (Victoria, B.C., Canada). It was a pleasure discussing Philippine history and heritage with fellow educators.

International Museum Day (IMD) was established in 1977, following a resolution of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) to create an annual event that would β€œfurther unify the creative aspirations and efforts of museums” and β€œdraw the attention of the world public to their activity.”

Over time, IMD has grown into a global observance, reflecting the expanding role of museums in public education, cultural exchange, and heritage preservation.

Consider visiting a nearby museum with family or friends. Happy International Museum Day, everyone!
