Mindanao State University (MSU) proudly celebrates another milestone in strengthening its innovation and intellectual property ecosystem as its Intellectual Property team successfully completed the 2026 WIPOโIPOPHL Summer School on Intellectual Property in Emerging Economies, held from July 20โ31, 2026.
Representing the University were Prof. Najibulla Umpa A. Umpa, Ph.D., Chief of the MSU Intellectual Property Office (MIPO) and ITSO Manager, together with Ms. Aynnah S. Pangandaman, MAN, RN, and Ms. Johairah M. Gumampong, LPT, both IP Technical Experts of the MSU Intellectual Property Office.
Jointly organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL), the prestigious Summer School is an intensive international training program that equips intellectual property professionals with advanced knowledge and practical competencies in intellectual property management, technology transfer, research commercialization, patent systems, trademarks, copyright, geographical indications, and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and blockchain.
More importantly, the Summer School served as a significant upskilling initiative for the MSU ITSO personnel, enhancing their technical expertise and strengthening their capacity to provide quality intellectual property services to researchers, inventors, faculty members, students, and innovators across the University. The knowledge and global best practices gained from the program will further reinforce MSU's initiatives in protecting intellectual assets, promoting innovation, facilitating technology transfer, and commercializing research outputs.
This achievement directly advances the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 9 โ Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, by strengthening MSU's innovation ecosystem through enhanced expertise in intellectual property management, technology transfer, and research commercialization. It likewise supports SDG 17 โ Partnerships for the Goals, as the WIPOโIPOPHL Summer School exemplifies international collaboration and capacity-building initiatives that empower institutions in developing countries with globally recognized intellectual property knowledge and competencies. Furthermore, the program contributes to SDG 4 โ Quality Education by providing high-quality professional development opportunities and to SDG 8 โ Decent Work and Economic Growth by equipping intellectual property professionals with the skills necessary to foster innovation, entrepreneurship, technology commercialization, and sustainable economic development.
This achievement reflects MSU's continuing commitment to building a stronger culture of innovation and excellence in intellectual property management in support of national development.
The MSU Intellectual Property Office extends its sincere appreciation to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) for providing this valuable learning opportunity and for their unwavering commitment to strengthening intellectual property capacity in emerging economies.
We likewise express our heartfelt gratitude to Atty. Paisalin P.D. Tago, CPA, MSU System President, for his visionary leadership and steadfast support for research, innovation, and intellectual property development, and to Dr. Annie Mae C. Berowa, Vice Chancellor for Research, Extension and Development, for her continued encouragement and support in advancing the University's innovation agenda.
Together, we continue to strengthen the Mindanao State University Innovation and Technology Support Office (ITSO) and build a more innovative, research-driven, and globally competitive MSU.
