𝗜𝗡 𝗣𝗛𝗢𝗧𝗢𝗦: The 𝗥𝗜𝗧𝗠 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲 (𝗕𝗥𝗠𝗢) successfully conducted a training on Biosafety, Biosecurity, Biorisk Management, and Respirator Fit Testing for the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) in Cebu City.
This initiative supports VSMMC’s goal of establishing the f𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗲 (𝗜𝗕𝗕𝗖) 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘆𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗼. The training aimed to future founding committee members of IBBC, with knowledge and competencies in biorisk management.

Mainit na sinalubong ng Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (𝗩𝗦𝗠𝗠𝗖) sa Cebu City ang 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲 (𝗕𝗥𝗠𝗢) 𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗜𝗧𝗠. Ang pagbisitang ito ay kaugyan ng gaganaping pagsasanay ng ilan piling empleyedo ng VSMMC sa biosafety at biosecurity. Naging daan narin ang pag kakataon na ito na mapag usapang ang mga maaring exciting na collaboration patungo sa pagbuo ng sarili nilang komite sa hinaharap.
Pinangunahan ni VSMMC Medical Service Division Chief Dr. Reynette Christine J. Ligaray, FPSP, MPH ang discussion tungkol sa pag-establish ng Institutional Biosafety and Biosecurity Committee (IBBC) sa VSMMC. Kasama sila RITM BRMO Head Mr. Plebeian Medina, VSMMC Pathology Department Head Dr. Chamberlain I. Agtuca Jr., VSMMC Research Institute’s Dr. Reden Patalinjug and Dr. Helen Madamba, and VSMMC Biosafety Officer Mr. Randall Joey Angob, pinagusapan ng grupo ang kahalagahan ng pagkakaroon ng IBBC sa rehiyon. Ito ang posibleng maging kauna-unahan sa Visayas at Mindanao!
𝗕𝗮𝗸𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗴𝗮? Dahil sa pagdami ng mga pathogen-related research sa rehiyon, layunin ng IBBC na tiyakin na ang lahat ng protokol ay sumusunod sa pinakamataas na national at international biosafety and biosecurity standards.

𝗥𝗜𝗧𝗠 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗗𝗢𝗛 𝗖𝗮𝗟𝗮𝗕𝗮𝗥𝗭𝗼𝗻’𝘀 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘆

The Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) was recognized as a key partner in strengthening local health systems during the 1st Regional Integrated Awarding Ceremonies of the Department of Health – Center for Health Development (CHD) Region IV-A (CaLaBaRZon), held on December 10, 2025 at Hotel Casiana in Tagaytay City.

Three (3) RITM offices—the Laboratory Research Division Office (LRDO), the Biorisk Management Office (BRMO), and the Advanced Molecular Technologies Laboratory (AMTL)—were conferred plaques of recognition in acknowledgment of their sustained contributions, best practices, and collaborative work with regional and local stakeholders in advancing public health in CaLaBaRZon.

The awarding ceremony carried the theme “Bayanihan para sa Kalusugan, Pagpupugay sa Sama-Samang Tagumpay ng CaLaBaRZon,” highlighting the collective efforts of local government units (LGUs), national government agencies, and partner institutions in achieving milestones toward Universal Health Care (UHC) and health equity for all. The event celebrated not only individual achievements, but also the power of collaboration in delivering people-centered health services.

The recognition of LRDO reflects its vital role in providing laboratory expertise, technical assistance, quality assurance, and capacity-building support to regional and local laboratories. Through its work, LRDO has helped strengthen diagnostic services and improve access to reliable laboratory testing—an essential foundation for effective disease surveillance and clinical care.

BRMO was honored for its leadership in promoting biosafety and biosecurity practices, ensuring that laboratories and health facilities operate safely while maintaining compliance with national and international standards. Its efforts contribute to protecting health workers, communities, and the environment, while enabling laboratories to function efficiently and responsibly.

Meanwhile, AMTL was recognized for its critical role in expanding access to advanced molecular diagnostics in the region. Through confirmatory testing, surge capacity support, and technical collaboration, the AMTL has played a key role in strengthening the region’s preparedness and response to emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases.

Beyond individual office achievements, the recognition of RITM during the ceremony underscored its role as a trusted national reference institution and partner in building resilient, responsive, and integrated local health systems. The event also served as a symbolic reaffirmation of the shared commitment between RITM, DOH CHD CaLaBaRZon, LGUs, and other partners to uphold the principles of bayanihan, equity, and service to the Filipino people.

RITM remains committed to working closely with regional and local partners to advance science-driven, people-centered health services—ensuring that quality diagnostics, safe laboratory practices, and technical excellence continue to support the realization of Universal Health Care in CaLaBaRZon and beyond.

Captured in photos: The launch of the ASEAN Biobank project is now in full swing!

The Research Institute for Tropical Medicine, under the Biological Risk Management Office, hosted the inaugural 1st ASEAN Biobank Technical Experts’ Consultative meeting from December 16 - 18, 2025 at Acacia Hotel, Alabang, Muntinlupa City.

Experts from the National Reference Laboratories of RITM, Sub-National Reference Laboratories of Bicol, the Lung Center of the Philippines, and the Center for Health Development - Region 4A came together for this important gathering. Representatives from the Office for Health Laboratories and the Health Facilities and Services Regulatory Bureau also participated. Key individuals from the Southern Philippines Medical Center, Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center, Valenzuela Hope Molecular Laboratory and Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center joined the meeting online.

During this consultative meeting, valuable information was collected to lay the foundation for the national governance framework and biosecurity measures for handling high-risk pathogens. Discussions revolved around identifying specific topics, activities, and stakeholders for the upcoming 1st National Consultative Meeting for Biobanking Gap Analysis and the 1st ASEAN Biobank Consultative Meeting for Drafting the ASEAN Biosharing Agreement.

This collaborative effort not only sets the strategic direction for the project but also highlights the Philippines' leadership role in ASEAN 2026.
