As the saying goes: "Pen is mightier than a sword", The Philippines did not wield bolos, knives, spears and guns to defend its rights and fight false propaganda in the West Philippine Sea. Instead, the government produced a comic book to educate Filipinos on the importance of its maritime claims, sovereignty and sovereign rights over the West Philippine Sea.
Last January 24, 2025, Ma'am Rosalie De Guzman, our Club Moderator, represented our principal, Dr. Antonio B. Rocha, in the launching of the comic book "Ang mga Kwento ni Teacher Jun (The Stories of Teacher Jun)," which is design to instill national pride and responsibility to Filipinos as stewards of the country's maritime legacy.
To spread the love for learning, hundreds of free copies were handed out to selected public high schools within Metro Manila of which we are one of the lucky recipients.
This comic book is a testament to how stories can be wielded to inform, to inspire, and to ignite action.
This was made possible through the collaboration of creative and brilliant minds in the National Task Force for the West Philippine Sea (NTF-WPS), together with the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG).
The Stories of Teacher Jun isn't just a comic-it's a movement. It's about empowering each and every one of us to learn, engage, and take pride in being a steward of our seas.
The book tells the story of a student's fisherman father who struggles to go to sea due to the presence of the Chinese Coast Guard. It aims to counter China's alleged disinformation and to better inform Filipinos on their sovereign rights. It was divided into six chapters.
The first part introduces our Maritime Zone outlined by the United Nations Conventions on the Law of the Sea explained in a very simple terms using the analogy of house fences and backyard to illustrate the concept.
The second part discusses the long standing legitimate historical accounts that support our position in the West Philippine Sea including references to establish our claims.
The third part of the book addresses the 2016 Arbitral Award which emphasizes the invalidation of the People's Republic of China's claim.
The fourth chapter explores how fake news and disinformation distort factual narratives and impact public perception of the issue.
The fifth chapter highlights the government efforts towards transparency and exposing Chinese's aggression to counter misinformation and foster a sense of patriotism among Filipinos.
Finally, the last chapter of the book depicts conversation among the young characters, expressing aspirations to contribute to fight for the West Philippine Sea.
Through its pages, we hope to spark curiosity, inspire pride, and empower our youth to protect what is rightfully ours.
So, grab a copy borrow from our Learning Resource Center, dive into the adventure by scanning the QR Code below or clicking the link posted, and let's protect what's ours because the future of the West Philippine Sea starts with us!
