This is one of the most frightening facts about fires: you don't have to touch a flame to be seriously injured or killed by a fire.
Hereโs why:
- โ ๏ธ Toxic gases: Burning materials can release carbon monoxide, which prevents your blood from carrying oxygen effectively. Some fires also release hydrogen cyanide and other dangerous chemicals.
- ๐ต Confusion and unconsciousness: Carbon monoxide exposure can cause headaches, dizziness, confusion, and loss of consciousness. You might not realize you're in danger.
- ๐ซ๏ธ Invisible obstacles: Thick smoke can hide exits, stairs, and obstacles, making escape much harder.
- ๐ซ Lung damage: Hot smoke and irritating particles can injure your airways and lungs.
- โก Rapid danger: In a severe fire, smoke and heat can make a room unsafe before flames reach every part of it.
๐จ What's especially scary?
Imagine waking up in the middle of the night. A fire has started in another room, and smoke is drifting into your bedroom. You might not see any flames, but the air could already be dangerous.
You cannot reliably judge whether smoke is safe by its color, smell, or thickness. Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless.
๐ก๏ธ How to protect yourself
1. Install working smoke alarms, especially near sleeping areas.
2. If a fire occurs, get outside immediately using a safe exit.
3. If smoke blocks your escape route, use another exit if possible. Don't enter a smoke-filled hallway to investigate.
4. Once outside, stay outside and call emergency services.
Remember: Smoke is not just a warning that fire exists. It is itself a potentially deadly hazard.
