Ever wondered why you canโ€™t bring those deliciously sweet Palawan mangoes back home in your luggage?

If youโ€™ve ever had a fresh mango confiscated at the Puerto Princesa airport, you are not alone. For nearly 40 years, Palawanโ€™s prized fresh mangoes have been under a strict legal lockdown.

THE HIDDEN ENEMY: THE MANGO PULP WEEVIL
Since 1987, southern Palawan has been battling the Mango Pulp Weevil (MPW).

This sneaky pest lays its eggs under the skin of the mango. The larvae eat the inside of the fruit, completely destroying it, while the outside looks perfectly healthy and beautiful.

To protect the rest of the Philippines' massive mango trade, the Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) strictly enforces Special Quarantine Order No. 20, which bans all fresh mangoes from leaving the island.

NUCLEAR SCIENCE & SUNLIGHT
The Department of Agriculture (DA) and the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI) have teamed up with global experts to launch massive eradication initiatives:

The "Sunlight" Weapon โ˜€๏ธ: Local research found that exposing infested organic material to direct, intense sunlight can yield a 100% weevil mortality rate! This eco-friendly method has slashed local farm infestation rates from 40% down to 0% in tested areas.

Gamma Radiation Technology โš›๏ธ: Scientists have successfully used specific doses of gamma radiation to safely neutralize the weevils inside the fruit without harming the mango or leaving chemical residues. This breakthrough is now recognized under international trade standards.

Border Containment ๐Ÿšซ: High-tech checkpoint stations monitor transit terminals and municipal lines to stop the pest from spreading to clean northern towns.

POWER TO THE FARMERS
While fresh mangoes are grounded, Palawanโ€™s incredible farming networks have found a brilliant loophole: processed products are 100% legal to export!

Groups like the Tagumpay Agrarian Auto-Savings Multi-Purpose Cooperative (TAAS-MPC) in Puerto Princesa operate a massive โ‚ฑ15-million processing facility backed by the World Bank. They buy surplus crops from local growers and turn them into mouthwatering dried mangoes, mango nectars, and jams.

Meanwhile, the Aborlan Mango Growers Association works hand-in-hand with the DA to run a specialized MPW Detection and X-ray facility to ensure local trade stays safe and clean.

FOR TOURISTS & LOCALS

FRESH MANGOES โŒ: DO NOT pack fresh mangoes in your bags. They will be confiscated at airport and seaport agricultural checkpoints.

PROCESSED MANGOES โœ…: DO buy dried mangoes, purรฉes, and sweets! They are perfectly safe, legal to travel with, and directly support our local cooperatives.

Palawan's mango industry may be down on fresh exports, but our farmers and scientists are proving that local resilience is sweeter than any challenge.

โœˆ๏ธ๐ŸŒฑ Strengthening Partnerships for Biosecurity and Agricultural Protection! โœˆ๏ธ๐ŸŒฑ

On June 23, 2026, under the leadership of Ms. Jhoana Grace B. San Gabriel, Area Manager of PQS-NAIA, together with the Plant Quarantine Officers, we proudly participated in the Airport Operations Council (AOC) Meeting.

During the meeting, we had the opportunity to present the Plant Quarantine Rules and Regulations to airline representatives and airport stakeholders, highlighting the importance of compliance in preventing the entry and spread of plant pests and diseases through our airports. This collaborative effort supports the protection of Philippine agriculture, food security, and the environment.

As part of our continuing information and awareness campaign, informational flyers were distributed to airline representatives, along with tokens of appreciation, to further strengthen partnerships and promote greater awareness of plant quarantine requirements among airline personnel and passengers.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Edgar Allan Nepumuceno, Head of the Airport Operations Council, and Ms. Krystine Baligod, AOC Secretary, for their warm accommodation, support, and hospitality, which greatly contributed to the success of this activity.

Thank you to all airline partners, airport stakeholders, and participants for your valuable engagement and cooperation. Through strong leadership, teamwork, and collaboration, we remain committed to safeguarding our borders and protecting Philippine agriculture for future generations. ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒพ

๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿฅญโœˆ๏ธ A Reminder to All Airport Passengers

Let us not waste the years of hard work, dedication, and research that have gone into developing and protecting the world-renowned Guimaras Mango.

Bringing mangoes and other plant materials from other countries into the Philippines is prohibited and poses a serious risk. These products may carry plant pests and diseases that can threaten our agriculture, damage local crops, and potentially devastate the mango industry that supports many Filipino farmers and communities.

Help us protect our farms, our livelihoods, and our food security.

If you are traveling from abroad, please declare all agricultural products and comply with plant quarantine regulations.

Together, we can keep our mangoes healthy, safe, and thriving for future generations. ๐Ÿฅญ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ญ
