Filipino student-led groups and multi-sectoral youth organizations from the Manila University Belt took to the streets on September 21, 2026, to lead a series of coordinated mass actions. The demonstrations, which coincided with the 54th anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law, focused heavily on demands for historical preservation, government transparency, and systemic accountability.

Wearing black attire to symbolize remembrance and the continuous fight for justice, hundreds of student advocates marched through the University Belt thoroughfares toward Morayta and Liwasang Bonifacio, transforming parts of the busy Manila district into a venue for public dissent.

The mobilization began at the main gates of the University of Santo Tomas along Espaรฑa Boulevard, serving as a primary assembly point for the progressive youth groups. Student leaders from various university formations took turns delivering speeches, emphasizing that the current generation bears the profound responsibility of countering historical distortion and preserving the memory of past human rights struggles.

Among the key points raised by the student coalitions were demands for stricter audits and transparency regarding state-level budgeting and government expenditures. The youth also voiced direct resistance against specific localized surveillance and security policies, such as the PAX Silica initiative, while condemning the red-tagging of campus journalists and progressive student leaders.

By stepping up as the vanguard of national conscience, these student groups demonstrated that the involvement of the youth is not merely symbolic, but a necessary force in challenging state narrative overreach. The marchers eventually proceeded toward Mendiola Bridge and Liwasang Bonifacio to join broader labor and multi-sectoral coalitions, capping off a full day of peaceful civic action that underscored the youth's indispensable role in nation-building.

NEVER AGAIN, NEVER FORGET! โœŠ

September 21 marks the anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law in the Philippines under Proclamation No. 1081 in 1972. Its implementation brought sweeping changes to the country, including restrictions on civil liberties, arrests and detentions, censorship, and documented human rights violations. ๐Ÿซ€

As we look back on this significant chapter in Philippine history, may we remember the stories of those who experienced its consequences and honor those who fought for their rights and freedoms. ๐Ÿ‘†๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ

History is not only meant to be rememberedโ€”it is meant to be understood. May we continue to seek truth, uphold freedom, and carry the lessons of the past into the future. ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ๐Ÿค
