The Philippine Consulate General in Honolulu, in partnership with Capitol Modern and Nui Kealoha, officially launched Filipino Food Week 2026, running from October 11 to 18 under the theme โ€œS**a: The Vinegar of the Philippines.โ€

The weeklong celebration highlights the richness of Filipino cuisine, showcasing the ingredients, culinary traditions, and cultural stories that make Filipino food distinctive while strengthening cultural connections within Hawaiสปiโ€™s diverse community.

The launch brought together representatives from government, the culinary community, and cultural organizations for an afternoon celebrating Filipino heritage through food, music, and meaningful community engagement.

The program opened with welcome remarks by Aly Ishikuni of Capitol Modern, followed by messages from Philippine Consul General Arman Talbo and State Senator Rachele Lamosao. Chefs Kealoha Domingo and RJ Abad also shared remarks highlighting the importance of preserving Filipino culinary traditions and recognizing food as a powerful expression of cultural identity, heritage, and community.

A highlight of the launch was a collaborative Filipinoโ€“Hawaiian culinary experience that brought together culture, cuisine, community, and the distinctive flavors of s**a, the Filipino word for vinegar. The traditional kamayan lunch offered guests a communal dining experience in which food was shared and enjoyed by hand, reflecting Filipino values of hospitality, generosity, and togetherness.

The specially curated menu showcased the creativity of Chefs Kealoha Domingo and RJ Abad, combining Filipino culinary traditions with locally inspired ingredients. Starters included ground pork and farmers market vegetable lumpia with s**a dipping sauce, prepared by Chef Kealoha, and shrimp kinilaw with shrimp chips, prepared by Chef RJ. The salad course featured heirloom tomatoes and pฤko with house-made chili vinaigrette. Entrรฉes included pork adobo and pandesal with pickled red onion, alongside chicken inasal with ampalaya (bittermelon) giardiniera and rice. For dessert, guests enjoyed buko pandan with pinipig granola and seasonal fruit. Chef Kealoha also prepared a s**a shrub mocktail, demonstrating vinegarโ€™s versatility in contemporary beverage creations.

The gathering also featured a musical performance by Kent Pontivedra, adding to the festive atmosphere and further celebrating Filipino cultural expression.

Throughout October 11โ€“18, residents and visitors are invited to explore Filipino cuisine through participating restaurants and hotels across Oสปahu, Maui, and American Samoa.

Filipino Food Week 2026 is supported by Philippine Airlines (PAL), Capitol Modern, Mama Sitaโ€™s, EastWest Marketing, Tanduay, Maui Chili Chili Oil, and the Department of Tourismโ€“Los Angeles (DOT-LA).

Today, we were deeply honored to welcome Mr. Oscar Bangui, a 100-year-old Filipino World War II veteran, and his family to the Philippine Consulate.

He may be among the last Filipino WWII veterans in Hawaiสปi. His generation fought for the freedoms we enjoy today. Their sacrifices must never be forgotten, and their stories must live on for generations to come.

Mahalo, Mr. Bangui, for your service, courage, and extraordinary legacy. Mabuhay po kayo! ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐ŸŒธ
