The Importance of Fraternity Chapters by Rod Confesor, '68

Among the many issues that beset the fraternity, the one that elicits more than the usual queries involves the topic of Chapters. Inevitably, the question of their importance and relevance will often be posed not only by brods but observers alike who claim that our strength lies precisely along this line.

How important are chapters?

The answer is found in the very heart of the original Triskelion gospel of reforming the traditional fraternity system.

Our philosophy of reform was certainly not meant to be exclusive to the University of the Philippines nor was it conceived to be simply a convenient way of providing an alternative to those who seek change and purpose to an old, traditional way of pursuing the concept of campus brotherhood.

The philosophy needs to be propagated, the gospel spread to anyone and everyone willing to listen, and more importantly, the concept has to be practiced and embraced by those who swore to live by it.

Propelled by this sense of purpose, the brods in the early seventies reached out and sought others outside of the UP campus who had the will to challenge their own university frat system.

It took a considerable amount of time and a lot of effort to obtain acceptance of a concept that sought true commitment and sacrifice from young minds.

The first and the oldest maritime school in the country came to be the very first to dare adopt these set of ideals. Thus, the Philippine Maritime Institute officially became the first TAU GAMMA PHI chapter in the country.

Others, like UST, Mapua, Adamson, UE, and FEU followed suit - a move that consequently changed the course of fraternity life in the university belt.

From my perspective, the importance of Chapters should be viewed on the basis of having been able to propagate and share the very essence of the Triskelion concept to other campuses outside of UP.

It confirmed that there were others within the system, who believed and were willing to validate within their own academic confines the ideals of a Triskelion brotherhood. It stood as proof that indeed we were filling a void, a need that was not fulfilled in many campuses for decades, a yearning for a different kind of fraternity.

But that was then, and this is NOW.

Over the years and after a brief episode of success, things began to change. Chapter formation was suddenly equated with numbers. Quantity in favor of quality. Strength in numbers became the new mantra. And the old guidelines were thrown away to be replaced by hastily devised rituals and a hodge podge of membership procedures designed to herd new recruits into a production line type of admission process.

Worse, we took the fraternity out of the confines of the college campus and brought it into neighborhoods while applying recruitment concepts that were originally meant for a student organization.

Leaving the confines of a structured environment and stepping into the streets was like entering a social laboratory of sorts and doing experiments without the benefit of scientific skills or even the proper hypothesis.

I know that I will no doubt ruffle the feathers of a good number of brods with my statements. I am however, too old and too stubborn to engage in compromise and shy away from being candid.

We have seen enough and heard enough to know that drastic measures will have to be taken to revive the true Triskelion spirit of reform and this time direct the same not at the system which we initially intended to change, but to our own organization instead!

As I have said before, the concept has to be practiced and embraced by those who swore to live by it. How many of us have done so? Who can honestly say, even among the alumni that they left the frat better than they found it?

Maybe at this point we should stop debating over the importance of chapters. We need new
chapters like we need a hole in the head. We have more than enough. The key is to make them relevant.

And that is a hard thing to do.

It has been unofficially proclaimed during orientations and reorientations that the following are the priorities of a Triskelion:

1. God
2. Family
3. Work/Livelihood/Career
4. Studies
5. Fraternity

Well, I have to disagree with priority number 5. There should only be 4 Priorities of a Triskelion, and they are as follows:
1. God
2. Family
3. Work/Livelihood/Career
4. Studies

The Fraternity is not the 5th Priority; rather the Fraternity is the director of these priorities. The Fraternity is the reason why we have these priorities in placed.

QUALITY OVER QUANTITY!!

We cannot deny the fact that we triskelions are one of the largest fraternity in the philippines. I guess its safe to say that a new member is accepted daily. But do we really need to multiply and accept new members as much as we can? Take a look at these few points before you think that recruitment is good.

1. NEW MEMBERS, NEW RESPONSIBILITY
As the Grand Triskelion and the rest of its Officers see the applicants, they shall take complete responsibility on the applicant's background check, status report and character. Recruiting nee members take more responsibilities to the rest of the officers. They will be held liable on the neophyte's mistakes and problems.

2. A CHAPTER WITH MANY MEMBERS IS HARD TO CONTROL
Not applicable on all Chapters, but mostly this happens a lot. Having many members with different kinds of attitude and character is a hard thing to take. Honestly speaking, unity cant be achieved in a full house chapter unless they are well oriented.

3. DISORIENTED MEMBERS AND DIVISION
More members means more minds. Different perspectives and thinkings. Decision may be against each other which leads to division of ideas and bring grudges. Not all members become oriented to our tenets and codes. creating groups in a chapter or a council, giving favoritism and envy.

For me, i believe that a chapter is not measured by the number of members. It is measure by the quality of triskelions they produce. Ill choose to be with my chapter knowing that we have one mind, one heart and same goals even if we are few. Id rather be sorrounded by few people but are well oriented, knowledgable and have a good character rather than be in a crowded chapter that has disoriented members, different characters and bad reputation.

Choose wisely. Quality is always above quantity!

Do you have a subjection?

I met many with multiple marks.1,2,3. I admire them for being proud. Let me just say my thoughts. It's how you love yourself more to be able to love others. It's how you respect yourself more to be able to respect others as well.
Always bear in mind the saying " QUALITY OVER QUANTITY". It's never about numbers, madami nga basura naman karamihan, so wala din. Sakit lang din sa ulo.
Our Tenets & COC is our guide to become a worthy triskelion. It's what binds all our complexities.
"Treat every triskelion with love and respect". Sino nakaka alala nito? I think not. So nasaan ang problema??? Nasa tao mismo. Sa paguugali, mental framework nya. Again, if we are after quality per se, recruitment process will play a vital role in choosing whom to accept and reject. Sobra na dami natin. Kaya ang hirap macontrol.
I only have 3 subjection, pina tattoan ko pa yung isa sa Fortis. It makes no difference. We are all judged by the deeds we do. Projects here and there pero mapalaban ang isang brod and everyone will label us magugulo, basagulero, mayayabang pero isa lang ang napa-away.

Salute and Have a blessed day always ☺️
