Domestiks is a modular geodesic dome structure. This modular design allows it to be assembled and disassembled within a few hours. The struts and hubs of the dome require a small storage footprint and can easily be transported to various areas for on-site assembly.
Strong winds brought about by typhoons produce negative air pressure when they hit the eaves of conventional homes. This pressure can be strong enough to totally or partially destroy roofs and leave the occupants exposed.
The aerodynamic shape of a geodesic dome and the absence of eaves and other suction elements prevent the production of negative air pressure. These give domes better resistance against winds from all directions. One can say that the dome shape reduces apparent wind pressure on structures significantly.
The video below shows a wind tunnel simulation using the Autodesk Flow Design Software. It also shows the applied wind pressure and the wind velocity flow pattern on a hemispherical smooth surface of the dome.

Here at Domestiks we keep on talking about geodesic domes and dome shelters. But what are geodesic domes? And what makes them an excellent choice as temporary shelters?
The term geodesic refers to structures that are constructed out of interconnecting lines rather than out of curved surfaces. In the case of a geodesic dome, the spherical surface of the dome is approximated using a series of short, interconnected straight lines (What is a geodesic dome? | R. Buckminster Fuller Collection - Spotlight at Stanford, n.d.). Typical geodesic domes were based on the sphere division of an icosahedron. The surface of the dome is approximated by planes of equilateral triangles arranged as planes of an icosahedron (Rebelo et al., 2019). This representation forms a frame of stable triangular elements, made up of a number of unequal and straight structural members, which provide excellent resistance to gravitational, wind and seismic loads (Peng, 2016). The structure is also extremely lightweight for its load-bearing capacity. Thus, geodesic domes have great potential for temporary shelters.
