The Geological Laboratory Services Section (GLSS), formerly known as PETROLAB, is the laboratory arm of the Lands Geological Survey Division. It provides services on geological laboratory analysis of minerals/ores, rocks, soil, sediments, fossils, and other types of samples. These samples usually come from the public and private sectors including educational institutions, MGB central office and MGB regional offices. GLSS also offers support services to satellite laboratories in the regions as well as conducts research and development on geosciences. Another undertaking of GLSS is the issuance of certification of no commercial value of ores, minerals and mineral product less than two (2) metric tons for transport purposes.
GLSS is basically composed of seven (7) laboratory units namely: Sample Preparation, Megascopic, Clay and Sedimentology, Paleontology, Petrography and Mineragraphy, Petrochemistry and X-ray Spectrometry and Diffraction. Aside from these laboratory units, GLSS also has its maintenance unit which renders preventive maintenance, repair and upgrading of laboratory equipment and facilities.
The GLSS is one of the frontline services of MGB that is part of the International Organization for Standardization or ISO/IEC 9001:2015 certification, affirming its commitment in implementing a quality management system to ensure optimum client satisfaction.
The Petrological, Mineralogical and Geochronological Services Laboratory (PETROLAB), was established through a Grant-In-Aid Program by the Government of Japan. Construction of the Laboratory was started in January, 1982 and was inaugurated and formally turned over to the Philippine Government and the Bureau of Mines and Geosciences on February 24, 1983.
Japan, as concerned neighbor and a major partner of the Philippines in mineral trade and resources, has come to the assistance through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in refurbishing the laboratory.
