30 Years of Saving Lives: DOH CALABARZON Marks Newborn Screening Milestone

โ€‹The Department of Health CALABARZON, together with the Local Government Unit of Calamba City and ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation, recently commemorated the 30th Anniversary of Newborn Screening (NBS) at the Jose Rizal Coliseum in Calamba City, Laguna.

โ€‹The milestone event featured a commemorative reunion with Janelle and JR, both diagnosed with congenital hypothyroidism, showcasing the life-changing impact of NBS. As part of the celebration's service extension, 30 infants were provided with free newborn screening and 30 recevied G6PD confirmatory testing.

โ€‹We express our sincere appreciation to Dr. Carmencita D. Padilla, recognized as the National Scientist and Mother of Newborn Screening, and to the frontline healthcare professionals whose unwavering dedication sustains this vital program.

The Department of Health - Center for Health Development (DOH-CHD) CALABARZON, in partnership with the GMA Kapuso Foundation and the San Mateo Local Government Unit, held a Newborn Screening Caravan on September 29, 2026, at the J.F. Diaz Stadium.

As we celebrate 30 years of Newborn Screening in the Philippines, we also celebrate the countless lives it has helped protect and the healthier futures it continues to build. As part of this milestone, 74 newborns received free newborn screening, reinforcing our shared commitment to giving every child a healthy start in life.

Newborn Screening (NBS) is a vital preventive public health program that enables the early detection of endocrine, genetic, metabolic, and hematologic disorders that may lead to severe disability or even death if left untreated. Because most babies with these conditions appear healthy at birth, newborn screening plays a critical role in preventing irreversible complications and improving lifelong health outcomes.

Beyond free newborn screening, the caravan also provided essential maternal and child health services, including postpartum counseling, nutrition and breastfeeding counseling, family planning services, immunization, and PhilHealth application assistance.

Three decades of newborn screening: 30 years of saving lives, building healthier futures, and helping every newborn thrive.

Nagsagawa ang DOH-CHD CALABARZON, katuwang ang GMA Kapuso Foundation at Lokal na Pamahalaan ng Biรฑan City, Laguna ng Newborn Screening Caravan nitong Setyembre 30, 2026, sa Biรฑan City Hospital.

50 na bagong silang na sanggol ang nakatanggap ng libreng newborn screening. Makatutulong ang programang ito sa maagang pagtukoy ng mga genetic, metabolic, at iba pang kondisyon na kadalasang hindi halata sa kapanganakan pero pwedeng magdulot ng malubhang kapansanan kung hindi maaagapan.

Naghatid din ang caravan ng iba pang serbisyo tulad ng postpartum at nutrition counseling, family planning, at pagbabakuna.

Tatlong dekada ng pagprotekta sa buhay at pagtataguyod ng mas malusog na kinabukasan.

Ngayong newborn screening week, layon ng GMA Kapuso Foundation at ng Department of Health-Calabarzon na mapalawak ang kaalaman sa kahalagahan ng newborn screening.

Isa kasi itong mahalagang test para maagang matukoy ang 29 na congenital disorder.

Kaya naman, nagtungo tayo sa Rizal at Laguna upang masiguro na mas maraming sanggol ang mabibigyan ng serbisyong pangkalusugan.
