EPISODE 4: TALKING KIDNEYS PODCAST!πŸŽ™οΈ
Kalusugan mo, Kwento natin! πŸ’ͺ😁

Topic: β€œFrom SURVIVAL to STRENGTH: Navigating MENTAL HEALTH in the CKD Journey and Preparing for KIDNEY TRANSPLANT.β€πŸ’–

A Historic First: Lung Transplantation in the Philippines πŸ‡΅πŸ‡πŸ«
The Lung Center of the Philippines (LCP), in collaboration with National Kidney Transplant Institute (NKTI), humbly shares a historic milestone. After more than 30 years in the making, the first ever lung transplantation in the Philippines has finally been performed.
On the night of April 6, 2026, the Joint LCP-NKTI Lung Transplantation Program received and carried out a multiorgan retrieval at the Makati Medical Center. The donor, through her family, who initially suffered a massive cerebrovascular event, gave the ultimate sacrifice of allowing her remaining organs to be donated to five (5) patients who were in need of β€œnew” lungs, liver, 2 kidneys, and cornea respectively.
After the retrieval, the healthy lungs were transported back to the Lung Center, and on the early morning of April 7, 2026, a bilateral sequential lung transplantation was performed on a young patient with end stage interstitial lung disease. The procedure was difficult, and our transplant team could not have achieved this great feat if not for the shared efforts of our surgeons, anesthesiologists, critical care & transplant specialists, pulmonologists, cardiologists, nurses, perfusionists, transplant coordinators, transplant psychiatrist, pulmonary and physical rehabilitation specialists, infectious disease specialist, pathologist, nutritionists, medical social workers, and many other allied support services. The whole Lung Center community has worked tirelessly not only now, but since the program has started, united by the shared mission to heal and to serve.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the donor and her family, the dedicated teams of Makati Medical Center, our transplant coordinators from the Human Organ Preservation Effort (HOPE), and all who worked relentlessly behind the scenes. Their compassion and commitment made this seemingly impossible endeavor, possible. We would also like to give special recognition to Professor Kim Ha Eun, our visiting thoracic surgeon from Yonsei Severance Hospital Seoul, South Korea, whose generosity in sharing her knowledge and expertise helped guide our team in this journey.
However, our goals are still far from accomplished. We humbly ask for continued prayers and support for our patient during her post operative course. She is currently still in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU), and not without some difficulties. Although she still has a long journey ahead, we are exerting all our efforts to make her go back home safe and sound. We pray for her continued strength, healing, and full recovery.
