Harnessing ICT in the Countryside The Next Wave Cities (NWCs) Program is one of the seven flagship programs of the ICT Industry Development Group of the ICTO.

In partnership with the Business Process Outsourcing Association of the Philippines (BPAP), it focuses on the creation and development of ICT hubs that shall serve as IT-BPO investment destinations outside Metro Manila, thereby creating economic opportunities in these areas. The ‘Bots Are Coming: Philippines’ Outsourcing Summit Tackles Impact of Automation on Industry

Will robots replace people in IT just as they have in manufacturing and in other industries? Since late last year, industry observers have marked the entry of “robots”—software that automates IT management processes—that cut the time needed to perform repetitive tasks and eliminate the risk of human error. While analysts’ opinions remain divided on the effect of robotics automation on the demand for outsourced IT work, the local outsourcing industry maintains that the demand will continue to be robust as local players pursue bigger market shares.

The outsourcing and BPO industry has grown tremendously in the Philippines. It now employs some 3500 new workers every month. At the recent International Outsourcing Summit (IOS) in Makati, I caught up with Mon Ibrahim, Under Secretary of Science and Technology, and discussed the latest strategies being undertaken by the Philippine government to continue the growth and evolution of the industry.
