Dumaguete City marked its 79th Liberation Day with a solemn wreath-laying ceremony held at the Quezon Park on 26 April 2024. The ceremony paid tribute to the veterans who fought against the Japanese Forces during World War II. Gracing the event is Guest of Honor and Speaker, Chairperson William B. Esplana of the Board of Trustees of Veterans of World War II (BTVWWII). He was joined by Col. Maria Sheila Jardiolin, Chairperson of the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office Disability Rating Board, who represented PVAO Deputy Administrator, ASec. Restituto L. Aguilar.

At the commemoration, Atty. Karizza Faye Maxino-Tolentino, representing Dumaguete City Mayor Felipe Antonio B. Remollo, conveyed a powerful message highlighting the city's commitment to historical preservation and veteran welfare. β€œWe honor the brave men and women who fought for our freedom and the eternal values of democracy, freedom, peace, and love of country,” she stated. She emphasized that the current generation owes a great deal of gratitude to those who fought for the liberties enjoyed today.

Keynote Speaker, Chairperson Esplana echoed this sentiment by urging the public to use their freedom responsibly to combat modern-day challenges such as crime, corruption, environmental degradation, and climate change. He urged the youth to fight against the issues that threaten our liberty and societal welfare as we enjoy the freedom we have today.

Meanwhile, Col. Jardiolin, delivering the message of Deputy Administrator ASec. Aguilar, highlighted the organization’s ongoing mission to honor the legacy of World War II veterans through active support and recognition. β€œPVAO’s mission transcends mere remembrance; it is a robust endeavor to repay, in whatever small ways we can, the immense debt we owe to our veterans,” she stated, emphasizing PVAO’s commitment to ensuring dignity and opportunities for veterans and their descendants.

Dumaguete City was liberated on 26 April 1945 when the Allied Liberation Forces met no opposition during their landings in Dumaguete. This is made possible through the efforts of the Filipino guerillas who hampered the movement of the Japanese in Southern Negros. The guerillas belonged to the 75th Infantry, 7th Military District under Lieutenant Colonel Placido A Ausejo. Despite being less-equipped, they limited the capability of the Japanese and was attached to the US forces during the mopping-up operations.
