Senator Rodante Marcoletaβs leadership and sterling performance in the Blue Ribbon Committee will be remembered as one of the most significant feats in the annals of Senate history. The last major anti-corruption driveβthe Janet Napoles investigationβnow pales in comparison to what was unraveled in just two hearings under Marcoletaβs watch.
The seemingly impenetrable, mafia-like network of DPWH officials and contractors has finally been pierced, with the Discaya couple, Curlee and Sarah, courageously submitting a legal affidavit that laid bare the scheme of bribes and payoffs, even naming legislators involved in the flood-control projects.
Yet despite this unprecedented breakthrough, Senator Marcoleta has been unseatedβundone not by failure, but by politics rooted in the flimsy arithmetic of majority and minority blocs. Once again, national interest has been set aside for petty alignments and personal ambitions.
We can only hope that Senator Marcoleta, rather than being sidelined, will be heralded as the new Minority Leader. In that role, he will no longer be restrained by the compromises of bloc politics, but free to take on the entrenched corruption that has long stifled our nation. If given that platform, his fearless pursuit of truth and accountability can continueβunyielding, unafraid, and unrelenting.
