39 years ago, millions of Filipinos stood against tyranny, toppling a dictator and restoring democracy through the bloodless EDSA People Power Revolution. It was a testament to the unbreakable spirit of a nation that refused to be silenced. Courage, solidarity, and resilience triumphed over tyranny. But today, that hard-won victory is under siege.
Under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the essence of EDSA is being systematically erased. The whitewashing of Martial Law atrocities has intensified, with government-sanctioned disinformation portraying his fatherโs dictatorship as a golden era. Historical accounts of human rights violations, media suppression, and economic plunder are being drowned out by revisionist propaganda. School curriculums are subtly altered, replacing facts with glorified myths of the Marcos regime.
The recent declaration of February 25 as a working holiday is not just administrative; it is a calculated move to downplay the revolutionโs significance. Stripping EDSA of its holiday status sends a clear message: its memory is inconvenient to those in power, and a threat to their positions. This move discourages younger generations from grasping its true weight.
Beyond mere historical distortion, impunity thrives. Political persecution, the red-tagging of activists, and the silencing of dissent persist. The hard-won lessons of EDSA, accountability, democracy, and resistance to oppression are being systematically erased, buried under state-sponsored propaganda and the suppression of truth.
A Marcos, once driven into exile, is back in Malacaรฑang. The same machinery of disinformation that secured his return is now being used to erase the sins of the past and cement his rule. The Philippines stands at a crossroads where history is manipulated, and the fight for truth and justice is undermined.
The fight for democracy did not end in 1986. It rages on today, against historical distortion and the erosion of our freedoms. Todayis more than a holidayโit is a symbol of our nationโs strength and refusal to be oppressed. We must remember, resist, and demand the truth. If we allow those people in power to rewrite history, twist narratives, and silence those who dare to remember, we risk losing the very freedom that millions once fought for.
START AIT stands firm in resisting the spread of disinformation and the erasure of history. As we mark the 39th anniversary of the People Power Revolution, we renew the call for justiceโnot only for the victims of Martial Law but also for those who suffered under the Duterte regimeโs bloody drug war. We must hold leaders accountable, safeguard our freedom and rights, and ensure that EDSAโs legacy endures for future generations. The fight for democracy is far from over, and it is up to us to keep its flame alive and burning.

Negros Occidentalโ On January 20, 2017, at 8:30 PM, Alexander Ceballos, a prominent peasant leader, was fatally shot near his home in Purok Tangke, Brgy. Pandanon Silos, Murcia. His death marked the first recorded extrajudicial killing of an activist under the administration of former President Rodrigo Duterte.
Ceballos, an organizer for the National Federation of Sugar Workers (NFSW), was known for mobilizing farmers in their fight against feudal practices. His efforts brought him into direct conflict with the influential De la Cruz family of Don Salvador Benedicto, who allegedly subjected him and his family to threats and harassment prior to his murder.
In a statement, Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas - Negros (KMP) condemned the killing of Ceballos and denounced the broader pattern of violence against peasants and activists during the Duterte administration. The group called for justice not only for Ceballos but also for the many other farmers and leaders who have lost their lives in the struggle for land rights and social justice.
The murder of Alexander Ceballos remains a chilling reminder of the dangers faced by grassroots organizers in their pursuit of equitable reforms in the countryside. Activist groups continue to demand accountability for such human rights violations.
We commemorate Alexanderโs death to resist the cycle of violence and to demand accountability from those who abuse their power. It is our duty to protect the lives of those who defend our rights and freedoms. Failing to act now not only risks allowing his sacrifice to fade into obscurity but also paves the way for further silence in the face of injustice.

: Human Rights Day
We are born to live a life of purpose and dignity, inherent in each and every one of us. We are entitled to human rights that ensure justice, equality, and freedom. Today, we celebrate this fundamental truth and renew our commitment to the ongoing journey of securing and protecting these rights for everyone, everywhere.
We have made significant advancements in the national and global fight for human rights. Today, many of us enjoy access to fundamental rights to life, education, and freedom from slavery and torture, rights that were hard-won by our ancestors, documented in instruments such as the Bill of Rights to honor their sacrifices. However, while progress has been made, we must acknowledge that there are gaps that still remain overlooked and even neglected. Together, the fight continues: we must not stop in ensuring that human rights are truly upheld for all, especially for those who face the greatest challenges in accessing them.
This year's theme for Human Rights Day, as released by the United Nations, "๐ถ๐๐ ๐น๐๐๐๐๐, ๐ถ๐๐ ๐ญ๐๐๐๐๐, ๐น๐๐๐๐ ๐ต๐๐," calls on us to empower individuals and communities for a better tomorrow. Now, more than ever, it is vital that we use our voices as transformative forces to advocate for change, to uplift the youth, and to shape a more equitable future for all. May we keep in mind that this celebration and fight transcend the 24-hour cycle; it is merely a short reminder for a cause greater than what a simple day could express.
Let us remember that the fight for human rights is ongoing, and together, we can create a world where everyone can live with dignity and equality.

: MALL IN UP: IS IT NECESSARY?
Today marks the launch of Robinsons Easymart in UP Diliman. We deeply oppose the growing commercialization of spaces within our academic institution. Despite the strong objections from students, vendors, and various community sectors, this project has progressed unimpeded. A clear disrespect and negligence for those who depend on the universityโs facilities for their livelihood and daily needsโ ๐ผ๐๐ฟ ๐บ๐ฎ๐ป๐ถ๐ป๐ถ๐ป๐ฑ๐ฎ๐.

This university must be honored as a space for academic freedom and community growthโ not as a profit-driven venture, especially at the expense of small business owners or vendors who have long been integral to campus life. These small enterprises contribute significantly to the universityโs identity as a community-driven institution.
The administration has justified the construction of DiliMall as being for the betterment of UP's facilities. However, this reasoning falls flat when confronted with the university's real, relevant, and pressing problems such as the lack of adequate student and dorm spaces, the shortage of classrooms, and the impact of the recent budget cuts. These issues directly affect the quality of education and campus life, yet they remain unresolved. ๐๐ถ๐น๐ถ๐ ๐ฎ๐น๐น ๐ฑ๐ผ๐ฒ๐ ๐ป๐ผ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ฑ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐ ๐๐ต๐ฒ๐๐ฒ ๐ป๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ฑ๐, instead, it serves as a ploy to generate profits while sidelining the actual concerns of the collective student body. Moreover, students are offered higher prices for essential goods and services that are more accessible in areas within UP Diliman.
This situation exposes a stark and unacceptable reality: Given that students and faculty are struggling due to a lack of adequate spaces and facilities essential for quality education, the administration chose to prioritize the construction of another mall inside the premises. Hence, we demand that the government and related education agencies intervene to The UP Administration must abandon the notion of commercialization as a way to generate income because ๐จ๐ฃ ๐ถ๐ ๐ป๐ผ๐ ๐ณ๐ผ๐ฟ ๐ฆ๐๐๐, nor should it ever be. This scenario not only ignites outrage; it directly undermines the core values that our institution stands for. Historically, UP has championed the interests of its people and upheld its principles, and We cannot allow these detrimental changes to dismantle what has been built through decades of struggle and commitment!
We at START AIT firmly oppose the use of UPโs land for commercial endeavors. Under Angelo Jimenezโs leadership, the UP administration must prioritize the genuine needs of the university communityโhaving a mall overseen by Gokongwei does not align with those needs. We challenge the UP community to ๐๐๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐ฎ๐ด๐ฎ๐ถ๐ป๐๐ ๐๐ถ๐น๐ถ๐ ๐ฎ๐น๐น and demand transparency and accountability from our administration. UPโs spaces should serve its people, not corporate interests. Letโs unite in this fight for our universityโs integrity!

Amplifying Your Voice: Why Our Vote is the Way to Having an Equal Society for All
Our right to vote is one of the most powerful tools we have to build a just and fair society. It is not just about choosing names or numbers in a ballot. Voting is about choosing the right people with the right platforms to represent our values and beliefs at the local, regional, and national levels. In the Philippines where there is a struggling and undervalued workforce and where Indigenous people are often marginalized, the importance of voting the people who will address these issues is crucial. Our vote is a step toward justice and equality, especially for the labor force and Indigenous people in the Philippines.
Our right to vote is also a huge responsibility. Voting for people who champion platforms centered around the Philippinesโ labor force and Indigenous people presents an opportunity to forward the calls of these stakeholders. First, it will give us a chance to defend the rights of labor workersโaddressing issues such as an increase in minimum wage from the insufficient P610.00 as of today and access to better working conditions [1]. Second, it will give us a chance to fight with the Indigenous People. Their representation in government roles continue to stagnate, counting only to 42, 638 in the first half of 2024 [2]. That is why we need a person who will represent them and be their voice so that they can be seen and heard. It only takes one voteโour voteโfor the right people whose platforms are centered on the labor workers and the minority to promote a just society for all.
It is therefore important that the candidates we support will fight for the masses, the minorities, and the marginalized. As voters and students, we must stay informed, continue to educate ourselves, and actively advocate for labor rights and empowering Indigenous People. The change is in our hands on how we will forward and champion a just and equal society for all.
Join us for an inspiring discussion on how your vote can be a powerful force for creating a society where everyone is respected, protected, and empowered!
