ON THE ISSUE OF MINIMUM WAGE
For many years, our country has not updated, nor re-calibrated its policy on the wage hike. Despite several phases of the economy not fully empowering the middle class, our government seems to have taken the route of job creation and the prevention of employment stagnation as the main policy directive when it comes to our hourly wage rate. With this, certain peaks of our economic growth are not fully felt and is not reaching those below the poverty line.
While it is crucial for us to sustain employment and minimize those reliant on aid/welfare, it is also important for us to consider the limited purchasing power that our masses are experiencing. Upon the presence of an inflationary era, it is also requisite for the State to help both private and public employees by providing them certain leverage when buying essential goods which can assist them make it through these uncertain times. Through re-consolidating hourly rates and eliminating regional differences on the minimum wage, it will boost sales and expand profit among micro, small and medium businesses. By re-examining the said increase, it will encourage our workers to remain productive and be able to initiate financial flexibility.
The dilemma between employers and employees is not the issue we are facing, it is making sure that no one is left behind when it comes to economic progress. By ensuring each of our blue-collar workers gets the help that they need, we are truly capitalizing on our greatest asset, which is the Filipino laborer.
