Biodiversity Finance Initiative (BIOFIN) is a global initiative across 35 countries that contributes to closing the gap for conservation financing by identifying, accessing, combining and sequencing funding sources by implementing finance solutions. The PBSAP project addresses the country’s need to fulfill its obligations under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and to contribute to the efforts towards implementing the CBD Strategic Plan 2011-2020 at the national level. Integration of the Philippines’ obligations under the CBD into its national development and sectoral planning frameworks through a renewed and participative biodiversity planning and strategizing process will produce measurable targets and indicators for biodiversity conservation and sustainable use. The updated Philippine Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (PBSAP), compared with the 2 previous iterations, has its own costing of the strategies and actions as well as a resource mobilization plan, which are among the key strengths of the Plan and where the Bodiversity Finance Initiative (BIOFIN) project contributes to. The Biofin Project will contribute to closing the global financing gap for the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity by identifying, accessing, combining and sequencing sources of biodiversity funding to meet national needs.

Small contributions can add up to big support for nature.

But a successful crowdfunding campaign takes more than simply asking people to donate.

The Together for Tamaraws campaign shows how a clear conservation goal, a relatable story, strong partnerships, and transparent communication can help turn public support into tangible action.

From August 4 to 6, BIOFIN Philippines of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Biodiversity Management Bureau (DENR-BMB) welcomed the Cambodian delegation for a 3-day ASEAN South–South Learning Exchange on blue carbon, biodiversity finance, and coastal and marine management. The delegation was composed of representatives from the Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction, and UNDP Cambodia.

During the study visit, the delegation discussed Philippine experiences and approaches to policy and governance, financing, accounting, and the management of coastal ecosystems.

The exchange brought the delegation together with:

-UNDP Philippines
-DENR-BMB
-Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA)
-University of the Philippines – Marine Science Institute (UP–MSI)
-ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB)
-Conservation International (CI) Philippines

to create opportunities, ask questions, and explore what lessons could be adapted to Cambodia's context.

The discussions will help inform Cambodia's ongoing work to refine its National Blue Carbon Roadmap, while boosting regional learning and cooperation on biodiversity financing and conservation.

On July 30, BIOFIN Philippines brought together partners from government, the insurance sector, development organizations, and conservation groups for the “Nature Insurance Workshop: Exploring Innovative Finance for Biodiversity.”

The workshop touched on the linkages between nature and insurance, and featured discussions on how insurance can be designed to support biodiversity conservation, drawing on insights from UNDP’s Designing Insurance for Nature: A Practical Guide.

Country experiences from Nepal and Maldives were also shared, providing practical, real-world lessons on the application of nature insurance. For the Philippines, the workshop was a step on the ongoing exploration of marine protected area (MPA) insurance, helping stakeholders better understand the insurance landscape, opportunities, and considerations that could inform the development of a potential insurance solution.

Perspectives from the insurance industry added an important dimension to the conversation, surfacing both the opportunities and challenges in developing insurance solutions for nature.

The discussions also explored whether insurance is the right tool for addressing a particular risk, or one of many tools that can be considered as part of a broader strategy to financing biodiversity.
