🏳️‍🌈 AUN-GJI VISITS SEAMO-RIHED AND AUN OFFICES 🏳️‍🌈

AUN-GJI convenor Dr. Ma. Theresa Payongayong, together with her staff, paid a visit to SEAMEO RIHED and ASEAN University Network at Bangkok, Thailand, on September 3, 2026.

They had the chance to meet SEAMEO-RIHED Centre Director Dr. Choltis Dhirathiti, as well as the other staff of both offices.

AUN-GJI expressed its excitement at the prospect of continuing its collaboration with their regional partners as they move forward with the shared goal of realizing gender justice across higher education institutions in ASEAN. ✨

Participants of the “Designing Gender-Transformative Syllabi: A Learning Exchange Program” were handed their certificates of participation on September 2 at the Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand, as a recognition of their valuable contribution to the success of the three-day program that brought together academics, staff, and gender justice practitioners across the ASEAN region.

Member organizations of the ASEAN University Network for Gender Justice and Inclusion who were present at the event were also recognized and given tokens of appreciation.

🏳️‍🌈 Pledge of Commitment | Designing Gender-Transformative Syllabi: A Learning Exchange Program 🏳️‍🌈

As an affirmation of their collective dedication to pursuing a gender-transformative higher education agenda, participants of the “Designing Gender-Transformative Syllabi: A Learning Exchange Program” signed a pledge of commitment that adopts three key priorities; outlines the crucial stakeholders to be engaged; maps the timeline of plans; and identifies opportunities for continuous collaboration in the future.

Dr. Ma. Theresa Payongayong presented the content of the pledge, which drew from the insights that all participants of the program shared over the past two days. The pledge encompasses the inputs from gender justice champions across ASEAN higher education institutions that they shared through the three learning exchange sessions from August 31 to September 1, 2026.

With this pledge, participants look forward to staying connected with one another and continuing their pursuit of further mainstreaming gender equality, diversity, and inclusion across all facets of higher education. 🥳✨

🏳️‍🌈Day 2 Second and Third Exchange Sessions | Designing Gender-Transformative Syllabi: A Learning Exchange Program 🏳️‍🌈

During the second day of the Learning Exchange Program on September 1, 2026, participants comprised of gender justice champions across ASEAN higher education institutions spent the entire day collaborating with one another to tackle ways to design gender-transformative syllabi and create actionable roadmaps to implement these curricular changes they envision.

The two exchanges build upon the first one that happened on August 31, 2026. For the second exchange, participants talked about how to embed a gender-transformative approach in their pedagogical strategies and assessment tools. All eight groups ended with their own developed or refined syllabi that infused their inputs to their chosen courses, ranging from social science to disaster preparedness classes.

After finally being cognizant of the collective challenges they face and the opportunities for transformation that they aspire to pursue, the participants explored the creation of a concrete blueprint for implementation. Participants identified three key priorities; the stakeholders they must engage; and a working timeline for the promulgation of these plans.

Day 1 First Exchange Session | Designing Gender-Transformative Syllabi: A Learning Exchange Program

The Learning Exchange Program, organized by AUN - Gender Justice and Inclusion in partnership with SEAMEO RIHED, brought together curriculum developers, educators, and gender and inclusion practitioners to share experiences and insights on implementing gender-transformative syllabi across disciplines and contexts.

Through an open exchange yesterday, August 31, 2026, participants reflected on the challenges they encounter, such as institutional and curricular barriers and gaps in knowledge, resources, and support. They also explored opportunities for strengthening gender-transformative and inclusive approaches in education.

The insights gathered in the first learning exchange served as an important context in identifying ways forward for the succeeding sessions of the three-day program.

Day 1 Resource Persons | Designing Gender-Transformative Syllabi: A Learning Exchange Program

Day 1 of the Learning Exchange Program, organized by AUN - Gender Justice and Inclusion in partnership with SEAMEO RIHED, featured insightful discussions on gender-transformative and inclusive education across disciplines, bringing together diverse perspectives from education, STEM, social sciences, and gender studies.

✨ Dr. Lorraine Symaco, Vice President for Academic Affairs, University of the Philippines, through Dr. Ma. Theresa Payongayong, opened the discussions with a presentation on "Gender-Transformative Education."

✨Dr. Sheryl Lyn C. Monterola, Director of the National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education Development (NISMED), University of the Philippines Diliman, delved into "STEM Education, Teacher Training, and Inclusive Pedagogies."

✨ Dr. Vachararutai (Jan) Boontinand, Lecturer at the Institute of Human Rights and Peace Studies, Mahidol University, Thailand, and Convenor of the ASEAN University Network–Human Rights Education, discussed "Gender Perspectives in Social Science Education."

✨ Dr. Lai Suat Yan, Coordinator of the Master of Gender Studies Programme and Senior Lecturer at the University of Malaya, Malaysia, shared "Perspectives in Gender Studies."

The presentations set the stage for the afternoon’s learning exchange, where participants mapped current gender justice issues, challenges, and barriers in teaching and curriculum.

MOU SIGNING BETWEEN University of the Philippines AND SEAMEO RIHED

The ASEAN University Network for Gender Justice and Inclusion (AUN-GJI) and the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization Regional Centre for Higher Education and Development (SEAMEO RIHED) formalized their partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) yesterday, August 31, 2026.

The MOU was signed by University of the Philippines President Angelo A. Jimenez and SEAMEO RIHED Centre Director Dr. Choltis Dhirathiti, marking a significant step toward stronger regional collaboration on gender-transformative education, inclusive higher education, and knowledge exchange across Southeast Asia.

The MOU signing was done during the first day of the Designing Gender-Transformative Syllabi in the ASEAN Region Learning Exchange Program, organized by the AUN - Gender Justice and Inclusion in partnership with SEAMEO RIHED. 🌎🤝

Day 1 | Opening Program

The Designing Gender-Transformative Syllabi in the ASEAN Region Learning Exchange Program, organized by the AUN - Gender Justice and Inclusion in partnership with SEAMEO RIHED, officially opened at the Faculty of Education, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand yesterday, August 31, 2026.

Bringing together educators, curriculum developers, and gender advocates from across ASEAN, the learning exchange begins a shared journey toward reimagining teaching and learning through gender-transformative, inclusive, intersectional, and decolonial approaches.

Messages were delivered by SEAMEO RIHED Centre Director Dr. Choltis Dhirathiti, AUN Executive Director Assoc. Prof. Dr. Thanapan Laiprakobsup, and UP President Atty. Angelo Jimenez.

Dr. Ma. Theresa Payongayong, AUN-GJI Convenor, also presented the expected outcomes and outputs of the learning exchange.

Here’s to meaningful conversations, knowledge exchange, and collective action for more gender-just education across the region. ✨
