Recognizing that public safety begins with safe government facilities, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) La Union and the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) La Union, a MSAC partner, have collaborated through Project FOCUS (Fire prevention through Oversight, Compliance, and Uniform Safety standards) to promote fire safety compliance among public buildings and government offices across the province.
The initiative was conceptualized following discussions during the Local Governance Provincial Resource Center (LGPRC) Multi-Stakeholders Advisory Committee (MSAC) meeting, where the BFP La Union underscored the importance of implementing the Fire Code not only among private establishments but also within public buildings and government facilities as mandated under Republic Act No. 9514 or the Fire Code of the Philippines.
Through Project FOCUS, DILG La Union and BFP La Union will undertake a province-wide inventory of public buildings, conduct advocacy and information campaigns, encourage government offices to undergo Fire Safety Inspections, and monitor compliance with fire safety recommendations. The project also seeks to establish a robust monitoring and evaluation system to track progress and ensure the implementation of corrective measures.
By fostering collaboration, accountability, and compliance, Project FOCUS aims to create safer workplaces, protect government assets, and strengthen a culture of preparedness and resilience in the Province of La Union.
