THIS 'LITTLE LIBRARY' CREATES BIG DIFFERENCE! π
Ilongga doctor Belle has warmed the hearts of social media users with her βLittle Library,β which she set up along a pathway in a small barangay in Tubungan, Iloilo, providing students and residents with easy access to books on their way to school.
"The Little Library I installed in a mountainous part of Iloilo in the Philippines. It is placed along the pathway where students pass by on their way to school. It offers easy access to books for both adults and kids," she shared in her Facebook post.
Dr. Belle also highlighted the daily challenges students encounter, especially the lengthy walks they must take to reach the nearest school.
"This Barangay is small lang, around 52 households [with] 215 population. Wala silang school sa barangay, kaya 'yung mga elementary students nila, naglalakad [papunta] sa school ng next Barangay. They pass by sa pathway kung saan ko nilagay ang Little Library para mapansin nila and nagpalagay ako ng ilaw para may ilaw yung pathway," she shared.
"In the beginning, I encouraged the children to drop by and offered small treats for every book they finished. I noticed they often picked thinner books and seemed hesitant to try the thicker ones. To motivate them further, I started a simple activity: for every "big" book they read and summarized, they'd receive a small gift. It's a modest initiative, but I remain hopeful that, in time, it will nurture a genuine love for reading," she said.
Dr. Belle emphasized that the children's hesitation to read stemmed not from disinterest, but from limited access to books and a need for encouragementβfactors she hopes will motivate others to launch similar initiatives in their communities.
