OZAMIZ CITY, Philippines โ The โฑ1.142-billion Ozamiz City Airport modernization project broke ground on Friday, October 9, as Misamis Occidental moves to improve air connectivity, strengthen tourism, and attract more investments.
Governor Henry S. Oaminal led the groundbreaking ceremony, joined by Vice Governor Rowena Gutierrez, Ozamiz City Mayor Sam Norman Fuentes, members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, local chief executives, and representatives of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) and other government agencies.
The project covers the construction of a new passenger terminal building worth โฑ720 million and runway improvements amounting to โฑ422 million. The first phase of the terminal is designed to accommodate 494 seated passengers.
The runway component includes asphalt overlay and shoulder grade correction to improve airport infrastructure and support safer operations. The modernization will also include runway lighting to support evening flights.
The new terminal will feature provisions for international arrivals and departures, including facilities for immigration, security, and Bureau of Customs operations, laying the groundwork for expanded airport services.
Beyond infrastructure improvements, the project is expected to make Misamis Occidental more accessible to travelers, support local businesses, and open opportunities for tourism and investment. The possibility of direct air connections between the province and South Korea is also being explored, although no route has been confirmed.
The modernization marks a major step in upgrading the provinceโs air transport facilities. Its long-term impact will depend on the projectโs completion, operational readiness, and the availability of expanded flight services to translate improved infrastructure into greater mobility and economic opportunities for Misamisnons.
