UP Sierra Madre Land Grants UP's Environmental Heritage for the 21st Century

The University of the Philippines, through UP Los Baños Land Grant Management Office (LGMO), manages two land grant areas in the southern portion of Sierra Madre mountain range, namely the Laguna-Quezon Land Grant (LQLG) and the Laguna Land Grant (LLG), collectively referred to as the UP Sierra Madre Land Grants. The LQLG, with an area of 5,729 hectares, was given to the University in 1930, to be held and administered as a permanent endowment for additional support and maintenance and for other purposes. On the other hand, the LLG, originally called the Paete Land Reservation and with an area of 3,355 hectares, was awarded to the University in 1964 to establish a central experiment station for the research and extension functions of the University, specifically the Colleges of Agriculture, Arts and Sciences, and Veterinary Medicine.

The Pag-IBIG Fund executives, led by Chief Executive Officer Ms. Marilene C. Acosta, conducted a ceremonial tree planting at the Laguna-Quezon Land Grant (LQLG) on 02 October 2026, marking the beginning of a 100-hectare forest restoration initiative to be funded by the Pag-IBIG Fund starting in early 2027.

They were welcomed by University officials led by Chancellor Jose V. Camacho, Jr.; Vice Chancellor for Administration Rolando T. Bello; Executive Director Enrico Supanco of the UPLB Foundation, Inc.; and Director Reynaldo E. Lorida of the Land Grant Development Office.

A brief program and exploratory discussion on the restoration initiative followed the tree-planting activity.

The activity highlights the ongoing institutional collaboration between the University and the Pag-IBIG Fund toward the restoration of the LQLG in southern Sierra Madre.

The Land Grant Development Office (LGDO) welcomed eleven (11) student interns at the Laguna-Quezon Land Grant (LQLG) who completed their internship program and actively contributed to LGDO’s conservation and biodiversity initiatives.

The internship cohort was composed of two (2) students from the Institute of Biological Sciences (IBS)-College of Arts and Sciences and nine (9) students from the College of Forestry and Natural Resources (CFNR), whose dedication and enthusiasm supported the ongoing activities at LQLG.

Throughout their internship, the students participated in the asexual propagation of various endemic plant species, including the iconic Jade Vine (Strongylodon macrobotrys) and several Medinilla species, contributing to the conservation and propagation of the country's rich native flora.

The interns also assisted in the maintenance and rehabilitation of the Conservation Gardens, as well as various nursery operations, including seedling repotting, nursery maintenance, and other plant care activities essential to LGDO’s conservation efforts. In addition, they conducted field herpetology and birdwatching activities to observe, document, and record the reptile, amphibian, and avian fauna within the LQLG, further enriching their field experience in biodiversity assessment and monitoring.

To culminate their internship, the students delivered their exit presentation before LGDO Director, For. Reynaldo E. Lorida, where they shared the accomplishments, experiences, and insights they gained throughout their training.

We sincerely appreciate our student interns for their commitment, diligence, and valuable contributions. We hope that their experience at LQLG has strengthened their knowledge, skills, and passion for biodiversity conservation and environmental stewardship.
