Over 1,000 native chickens (Basilan) were distributed to farmers and agricultural associations in Gen. MacArthur, Eastern Samar under the Livestock Dispersal Program of the Department of Agriculture, aiming to strengthen rural livelihoods and promote sustainable backyard poultry production in the locality.
The distribution benefited organized groups and individual farmers, with associations and cooperatives receiving between 200 to 250 heads each, while individual beneficiaries were allotted 25 heads each.
Among the recipients were the Sta. Fe Farmerโs Association, the General MacArthur Uswag Katarungan Agriculture Cooperative, and 22 individual farmers. The initiative is expected to increase household income, improve food security, and encourage community-based livestock production in the area.
The program is designed not only to provide immediate livelihood support but also to build long-term agricultural resilience among farmers and rural communities. Beneficiaries are expected to raise the native chickens responsibly and participate in the programโs pass-on scheme, allowing more families to benefit in the future.
Native chicken production requires relatively low maintenance while offering steady income opportunities through egg production and live bird sales.
The program forms part of ongoing government efforts to achieve food security through effective agricultural initiatives, including the expansion of livestock-based livelihood projects in Eastern Visayas.

Engr. Miguel Pedroso presented his accomplishments as Farmer Director during the Exit Conference held on June 8, 2026, at the DA RFO 8 Conference Room in Tacloban City.
In just a few weeks, he traversed provinces and municipalities, engaging directly with farmers, fisherfolk, youth leaders, agricultural extension workers, and local officials. Whether addressing farmer organizations, visiting agricultural research stations, participating in trainings, or inspecting model farms, Dir. Pedroso championed a leadership style rooted in listening, learning, and connecting with the people at the heart of the region's agricultural sector. His presence in the field underscored a simple but powerful message: effective agricultural governance begins with understanding realities on the ground.
Beyond recounting milestones, the conference served as a platform for a forward-looking vision for Eastern Visayas agriculture. Dir. Pedroso outlined strategic recommendations designed to strengthen farmer organizations, expand market opportunities, and promote sustainable rural development. Central to these was the "Gold and Purple Strategy," an initiative aimed at unlocking the economic potential of the region's jackfruit and ube industries through improved production, processing, and market integration. He likewise advocated for the revitalization of Municipal Agricultural and Fishery Councils (MAFCs), the strengthening of Farmers' Cooperatives and Associations (FCAs), the reorganization of commodity-based groups, and the broader implementation of the Sagip Saka Program.
Together, these proposals paint a roadmap toward a more resilient, market-driven, and farmer-centered agricultural sectorโone where innovation takes root, collaboration flourishes, and rural communities are empowered to thrive.

In a swift and coordinated effort to support the agriculture and fisheries sectors, the Department of Agriculture Regional Field Office VIII (DA-RFO 8) has successfully rolled out cash assistance under the Presidential Assistance to Farmers, Fisherfolk, and Families (PAFFP), reaching more than 12,500 beneficiaries across 11 local government units (LGUs) in Eastern Visayas.
The week-long distribution covered municipalities in Biliran and Leyte provinces, including Naval, Biliran, Almeria, and Kawayan in Biliran, as well as Dulag, Mayorga, Pastrana, San Miguel, Tolosa, Hilongos, Bato, and Matalom in Leyte. The said rollout was carried out within just one week, underscoring the agencyโs commitment to delivering immediate support to vulnerable farming and fishing communities.
A total of โฑ29 million in cash assistance was released, providing urgent financial relief to farmers and fisherfolk affected by various agricultural challenges and economic pressures. For many beneficiaries, the assistance serves as a critical lifeline to help sustain daily needs while maintaining productivity in their farms and fishing activities.
Behind the smooth and rapid distribution was a coordinated field operation led by DA RFO 8 personnel deployed as verifiers and disbursing officers. Multiple teams were mobilized across the region, enabling simultaneous rollout activities in different municipalities. This system significantly improved the speed and efficiency of distribution while ensuring that proper verification procedures were strictly observed.
The agency emphasized that the strengthened field deployment mechanism played a key role in accelerating the release process without compromising transparency and accountability. Close coordination with local government units and partner agencies further ensured that beneficiaries were properly validated and assisted in an orderly manner.
Beyond the figures and logistics, the rollout reflects a broader narrative of resilience and public serviceโwhere government support reaches farmers and fisherfolk at a time when rising costs and economic uncertainties continue to challenge rural livelihoods.
DA RFO 8 reaffirms its commitment to sustained and efficient implementation of the PAFFP, highlighting its continuing efforts to bring government assistance closer to those who need it most across Eastern Visayas.

The Department of Agriculture Regional Field Office VIII, through its Regional Soils Laboratory, successfully conducted the National Soil Health Workshop through Soil Nutrient Management from May 25 to 27, 2026 in Tacloban City.
The three-day capacity-building activity brought together Municipal Agriculturists and Agricultural Extension Workers from across Eastern Visayas to enhance their technical knowledge and skills in soil health management and nutrient stewardship. To maximize hands-on learning and participant engagement, the workshop was conducted in two batches. The first batch comprised participants from the provinces of Samar, Eastern Samar, and Northern Samar, while the second batch included representatives from Leyte, Biliran, and Southern Leyte.
The workshop was supported and attended by Norietta F. Orsua, DVM, Chief of the Integrated Laboratory Division, underscoring the Departmentโs commitment to promoting science-based agricultural practices and sustainable soil management.
The training sessions were facilitated by Edmond N. Odon, RAgr, Agriculturist II; Evangeline S. Garing, RAgr, Senior Agriculturist; and Louise Marie R. Jumao-as, RAgr, Science Research Specialist I. Participants underwent comprehensive discussions and practical exercises covering Soil Sampling Protocols and Fertility Maps, Hands-on Soil Test Kit (STK) Analysis, and fertilizer recommendation formulation using the FertRight Mobile Application.
Through a combination of lectures, demonstrations, and field-based exercises, participants gained valuable competencies in assessing soil fertility conditions and developing site-specific nutrient management recommendations aimed at improving crop productivity and resource-use efficiency.
The workshop concluded with the awarding of certificates to participants and a closing message delivered by Ma. Kris V. Tolentino, RCh, Chief of the Regional Soils Laboratory, who emphasized the vital role of soil health in ensuring sustainable agricultural development and food security.
The activity forms part of DA-RFO 8โs continuing efforts to strengthen the capabilities of Provincial Agriculturists, Municipal Agriculturists, and Agricultural Extension Workers, equipping them with the knowledge and tools necessary to effectively implement soil health interventions and support resilient, productive, and sustainable farming systems across Eastern Visayas.

Mula sa Adaptation and Mitigation Initiative in Agriculture - AMIA
โ
May Mulch (Mulched Soil): Pinapanatili ang moisture sa root zone, binabawasan ang evapotranspiration, at nagbibigay ng dagdag na sustansya sa lupa habang ito ay nabubulok.
Lupa: Pagkain, Seguridad, Buhay. Pangalagaan natin ngayon para sa kinabukasan!
