📍https://maps.app.goo.gl/VsmUJWMUns4BhRFy9

𝗖𝗛𝗔-𝗖𝗛𝗔 𝗡𝗚 𝗘𝗟𝗜𝗧𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗔, 𝗣𝗔𝗛𝗜𝗥𝗔𝗣 𝗦𝗔 𝗠𝗔𝗦𝗔!

𝐔𝐏 𝐓𝐀𝐂𝐋𝐎𝐁𝐀𝐍, 𝐁𝐈𝐆𝐔𝐈𝐍 𝐀𝐍𝐆 𝐂𝐇𝐀-𝐂𝐇𝐀 𝐍𝐈 𝐌𝐀𝐑𝐂𝐎𝐒!

LOOK: KALAYAAN-Lihok Mag-aaram, joined by participants from Homonhon and Manicani Climate Justice Movements, alongside diverse groups and bikers from different municipalities in Eastern Visayas, staged a powerful protest marking the Global Day of Action for Climate Justice on December 9, 2023.

The mobilization kicked off in Tanauan, Leyte, where cyclists pedaled their way to the MacArthur Landing Memorial Park in Palo, Leyte. Here, they converged with other groups for a resounding rally advocating climate justice.

Standing together with organizations such as Tmct-cyclist, Gios Kablasanon Homeowners Association PLM-Tacloban Chapter, Heard, Promisi, PMPI, Sanlakas, Oriang, FDC, PMCJ. As we approached the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, our joint efforts today spoke volumes. They revealed how human rights and the fight for climate justice go hand in hand. These moments emphasized a simple yet significant truth: we all want a world where everyone is treated fairly, and our future is protected from the harmful effects of climate change.

NO CLIMATE JUSTICE WITHOUT HUMAN RIGHTS!

Youth Letter of Solidarity with Palestine

Dear Ambassador Mohammad,

We, undersigned youth and student organizations, networks, and movements from the Philippines, express our wholehearted support for the worldwide call for an immediate, durable, and sustained humanitarian truce in Palestine.

We recall the overwhelming support given by 120 member states of the United Nations to the UN General Assembly resolution for an immediate ceasefire, which was adopted on October 26, 2023. It is our deep regret that the Philippine government chose to abstain from this call for a ceasefire. We are moved by our common humanity and our desire for sustainable peace in our generation to therefore assure you and the people of Palestine that, while our government as of yet does not take an unequivocal stance in support of a ceasefire leading towards peace talks, we youth of the Philippines do. The Palestinian people can be assured of the friendship and solidarity of the Filipino people.

We echo your previous statements on the decades-long unfair treatment and portrayal of the Palestinian people by the international community. This, we believe, is plainly visible in the “abstain” response of the Philippines towards the ceasefire resolution at the UNGA, a vote which refuses to recognize the overall historical context of the wholesale oppression and displacement of the Palestinian people at the hands of Israel. Nevertheless, we believe the tide is turning, and we are heartened that the Philippines voted to condemn Israel’s occupation of internationally-recognized Palestinian territory along with 144 other nations at the UNGA last November 14.

The Philippines, as a victim of centuries of colonial occupation, must see itself in the plight of the Palestinian people. The flagrant and repeated violations of international law by Israel perpetrated against the Palestinian people must be called out for what it is: it is genocidal violence, aimed at the eradication of the Palestinian people and the theft of their land. We reject any argument of a “right to self-defense” by Israel in the face of its sustained efforts to occupy Palestinian land, and to actively maintain a policy of racial discrimination against Palestinians inside its borders. A country such as the Philippines that grounds its foreign policy on international laws and norms cannot in the same breath accept the oppression of the Palestinian people.

We believe that an immediate ceasefire that opens the path towards peace talks offers the best chance to assure the safety of Filipinos living and working in Palestine and in Israeli territory. As of writing, four Filipinos have been killed in the ongoing conflict. We have no wish to see this number rise. Indeed, we have no wish to see any more death and any more conflict. While a ceasefire can halt further casualties in this current round of violence, talks for a just and lasting peace can prevent any further death, displacement, and destruction in the future.

Furthermore, we assert that the Philippines bears an immediate ethical responsibility to offer refuge and safety not only for its citizens in Palestine, but also to their Palestinian families and loved ones. We recall the noble act of the Philippines from 1937 to 1941 to shelter 1,200 Jewish people fleeing racist persecution in Europe at the hands of fascism. We believe that the same hand of solidarity must once again be extended by the Philippines to the best of its ability, this time to the people of Palestine.

The responsibility to shelter refugees from Palestine goes hand-in-hand with our call for an urgent cessation of conflict. We denounce Israel's cynical weaponization of Palestinians seeking refugee status. It is Israeli arms, and behind it Israeli policy, that is creating a refugee crisis in Gaza. Israel cannot make appeals to the world in the name of humanitarianism while it sends its occupation troops and settlers into Palestine.

We believe that, given the historical context of occupation, a just and lasting peace must rest on the premise of the Palestinian people’s right of return, under which victims of killings, displacement, and discrimination since even before the 1948 Nakba must be allowed to return to their homes and land, or otherwise be offered other equal forms of reparation by Israel. Be assured that our support for the Palestinian people is grounded in our desire for justice at home and abroad.

We join our voices with those of the many millions of people all around the world who are standing up to call for an immediate, durable, and sustained ceasefire, to support Palestine, and to condemn Israel’s brutal siege of Gaza and escalating illegal settlement of the West Bank. It is nothing less than our duty and our pride as a generation to do so. We are committed to doing our share to advancing a just peace in Palestine as part of our commitment to advance justice, peace, and popular power in our own country.

YOUTH RISE AGAINST FASCISM, CONDEMN STATE PROFILING AND SURVEILLANCE ON STUDENT LEADERS!
PULSO HAN MAG-AARAM alliance and KALAYAAN-Lihok Mag-aaram most vehemently condemns the profiling of state forces on the current student council Chairperson Paul Lachica and Councilor Dianne Laurente.
Reports indicate that on November 13, 2023, police/military units conducted operations at the residences of five UP Tacloban students in different municipalities in Leyte. The focus of these operations was to acquire personal information about the Chairperson and Councilor of the Student Council, including details about their degree program, year level, and other pertinent information. Subsequently, on November 17, 2023, a noticeable increase in police patrols was observed around the campus during nighttime.
This discreet and unsettling approach to gathering intelligence coincided with the on-ground hosting of the Organizations Fair for the current academic year. Notably, this marked the return of student-led activities on the UP Tacloban campus after a four-year hiatus following the pandemic. Regrettably, these incidents have cast a shadow over the highly anticipated resurgence of student engagement in university activities.
It was only three years ago that four UP Tacloban alumni, namely, Marielle Domequil, Frenchie Mae Cumpio, Alexander Abinguna, and Mira Legion, were subject to surveillance and extreme red-tagging, and arrested under fabricated charges. It is imperative to recognize that their arrest is solely attributable to their commitment to endeavors that the government, both in the past and present, has failed to address. Their pursuits involve rendering assistance and relief to communities in distress, advocating for the rights of farmers, and exposing instances of corruption within Region 8. Now, it would seem that the same forces that worked against them are gearing up to stifle any inkling of activism in Eastern Visayas.
These actions are not new to the experience of progressive individuals both in and outside of the University of the Philippines. But, it is clear that here in the Eastern Visayas region, these state forces are more empowered, especially as battalions of troops are deployed all over the Samar-Leyte countryside and the Terror Law remains in effect. This, partnered with the fact that Tacloban City remains a stronghold for the ruling Marcos Jr. administration, has been the cause of extremely limited space for civil organizations to conduct protests and amplify the voices of communities in the margins as we collectively face economic, political, and cultural crises.
We therefore call on these military and police elements to put an end to these Gestapo-like modus as it has caused severe detriment to the sense of safety, as well as the mental and emotional well-being of the UP Tacloban student body. We also urge the local governments of Tacloban and Leyte to call for an end to these intrusive and dangerous profiling of progressive individuals who only seek to help effect change in society.
We demand that the Terror Law be repealed as in the three years that it has been enacted, it has only been used to curtail our rights to organize and protest systemic wrongs that have worsened under this administration.
We assert that academic institutions must remain a demilitarized zone, free from any influence and interference from state forces and free to be a bastion of academic freedom and discourse as part of our constitutional rights. We extend this call for demilitarization to the heavily militarized barrios in Samar and Leyte that have been long-time victims of violence from the military’s killings and arrests of innocent farmers and bombings of farmlands.
We call on the UP Tacloban student body and all the youth of Eastern Visayas to remain steadfast and brave amidst these gross violations of our rights. As the future of our nation, the need to band together becomes crucial as we live out our mandate to serve the people. We also enjoin the administration of UP Tacloban and the UP System to uphold the rights and safety of their constituents.
Finally, PULSO HAN MAG-AARAM encourages everyone to learn from our history, study our society, and take part in the struggle for national democracy. Join national democratic organizations and be one in the fight for genuine freedom!
