: Celebrating Undas and Our Unique Culture!
Let’s reflect on our loved ones with this coming November 1st and 2nd! Do you know the history behind our "Undas"?
More than just two days of remembering the holy (All Saints' Day, Nov 1) and the departed (All Souls' Day, Nov 2), our Undas is a vibrant, colorful, and joyful celebration unlike any other.
Derived from the Spanish word "honras," meaning "honors," here are some interesting facts:
⛪ Catholicism: Over 300 years of Spanish colonization led us to adopt the practice of honoring saints and praying for the dead.
🌱 Indigenous Beliefs: Despite embracing a new faith, early Filipinos continued to hold onto pre-colonial beliefs in animism and ancestor worship, blending them seamlessly with Christianity.
This is what makes our Undas like a massive family reunion. Filipinos visit cemeteries, clean and decorate graves, and bring food, music, and games. Some families even stay overnight to hold vigils and pray.
It is a unique and diverse expression of our faith, uniting Christian and indigenous elements. Read the full, fascinating history from the official website on the poster!
Let us use this time to remember, honor, and continue our traditions. Stay safe, everyone, this Undas!
