💧 In celebration of 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐃𝐚𝐲 with the theme 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫, we recognize that access to clean and safe water is not just a basic need—but a matter of equity and inclusion.

Through science, technology, and innovation, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) continues to develop and support initiatives that ensure accessible and sustainable water for all. Among these are 𝐒𝐀𝐅𝐄𝐖𝐀𝐓𝐑𝐒 and 𝐓𝐮𝐛𝐢𝐠 𝐓𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐨

𝐒𝐀𝐅𝐄𝐖𝐀𝐓𝐑𝐒 is a technology developed by DOST-Industrial Technology Development Institute (DOST-ITDI), designed to promote safe water through efficient purification and monitoring systems, helping protect public health and empower communities. In 2024, DOST Ilocos Region deployed 𝐒𝐀𝐅𝐄𝐖𝐀𝐓𝐑𝐒 in Brgy. Nagbettedan, Sto. Domingo, Ilocos Sur; Brgy. Luna Weste, Umingan, Pangasinan; and Brgy. Narvacan, Santo Tomas, La Union. This initiative provides a sustainable solution to water scarcity by transforming unsafe water sources into reliable, potable supplies for the local population—improving daily living conditions and supporting inclusive community development.

On the other hand, 𝐓𝐮𝐛𝐢𝐠 𝐓𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐨 is a fortified drinking water developed by DOST-Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI). It is an initiative that promotes proper hydration while helping address iodine deficiency, emphasizing the importance of safe and nutritious water intake in maintaining overall health and well-being.

With deep sadness, we mourn the passing of our beloved friend and colleague, Engr. Joven R. Barcelo, Science Research Specialist II.

He has been a dedicated environmental researcher whose tireless work in waste management provided critical insights for sustainable practices implemented in various LGUs aside from his home institution, DOST-ITDI. His unparalleled dedication, kindness, and joyful presence will always be remembered by his ITDI-EBD family.

We pray for the repose of his soul. May he rest in peace. 🙏🕊

Republic Act No. 12290, or the Virology and Vaccine Institute of the Philippines (VIP) Act, signed by President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on September 12, 2025, establishes a national research system dedicated to virology and vaccine development. It formally creates the Virology and Vaccine Institute of the Philippines and institutionalizes a One Health approach to public health.

Championed by Sen. Pia Cayetano in the Senate, the VIP Act marks a significant step toward pandemic preparedness, health security, and scientific advancement in the Philippines.

Earlier this Afternoon: The Technology Licensing Agreement (TLA) Signing Ceremony was held for the Portable Biogas Digester, Dual Drum Composter, and Household Tumbling Composter between DOST-ITDI, DOST-IX, and Western Mindanao State University (WMSU).

Key signatories present during the ceremony included Engr. Reynaldo L. Esguerra, Chief of the Environment and Biotechnology Division, DOST-ITDI ODD-R&D; Ricardo J. Apolinario III, Assistant Regional Director of DOST IX; and Dr. Fredelino San Juan, Vice President for Student Affairs and Services.

𝐋𝐎𝐎𝐊: The Provincial Science and Technology Office – Mountain Province (PSTO-MP) participates in the Trainers’ Training on Waste Analysis and Characterization Study (WACS) held on September 16–17, 2025, at Myrna’s Hotel, Bontoc. The activity was organized by the Provincial Government of Mountain Province, through the Office of the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer (OPENRO), in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology – Industrial Technology Development Institute (DOST-ITDI). The training aims to strengthen local capacities in formulating evidence-based Solid Waste Management Plans under RA 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.

DOST Agencies Benchmark with ITDI's new Materials Recovery Facility

Days after its inauguration, representatives from the various DOST agencies visited ITDI's new Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) on Sept. 11, 2025 to benchmark on its operation.

Accompanied by ITDI Director Dr. Annabelle Briones and EBD Chief Engr. Reynaldo Esguerra and SupSRS Dr. Myra Tansengco, Asec. for Administrative and Legal Affairs Dr. Diana Ignacio led the visiting party, composed of staff from DOST-CO, MIRDC, PTRI, and STII.
