The Visayas Regional Scientific Meeting (RSM) marks the final leg of the 2026 series of RSMs organized by the National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL), in partnership with the DOST Visayas Cluster, led by DOST Region VIII - Eastern Visayas.
With the theme โUN SDGs: Science, Technology, and Innovation for Sustainable Development,โ the event brings together leading scientists, researchers, policymakers, industry representatives, and other stakeholders to assess Visayasโ progress toward achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The 2026 Visayas Regional Scientific Meeting continues this afternoon with two engaging plenary sessions:

History
The National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) originated as the brainchild of several scientists in the University of the Philippines Diliman.
NAST PHL, an attached agency to the Department of Science and Technology, is the premier recognition and advisory body of the Philippine Government in matters related to Science and Technology. Among the notable members of this small group were Dr. Joventino D. Soriano, a cytogeneticist; Dr. Gregorio T. Velasquez, a phycologist; his wife, Dr. Carmen C. Velasquez, a parasitologist; Dr. Edgardo

The National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL) commemorates the 19th Death Anniversary of National Scientist Paulo C. Campos.
National Scientist Campos was recognized for his outstanding contributions to nuclear medicine and to his research on insulin and goiter. He established the country's very first radioisotope laboratory and thyroid clinic at the University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital (UP-PGH). His dedication to studying thyroid disorders helped thousands of Filipinos get better care for a very common health issue. Beyond his work as a doctor, he served as the founding president of the NAST PHL.

The National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL), in partnership with the DOST Regional Offices โ Visayas Cluster led by DOST Regional Office VIII (Eastern Visayas), will hold the 2026 Visayas Regional Scientific Meeting (RSM) on 3โ4 June 2026 at Summit Hotel, Tacloban City, Leyte.
As the final leg of this yearโs Regional Scientific Meetings, following the successful conduct of the Luzon and Mindanao RSMs, the Visayas RSM underscores the regionโs crucial role in advancing science, technology, and innovation (STI) toward achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). Anchored on the theme, โUN SDGs: Science, Technology, and Innovation for Sustainable Development,โ the meeting also serves as a key preparatory activity for the 48th Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM).
The two-day gathering will feature plenary discussions and scientific poster presentations, bringing together experts, researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders from across the Visayas region to exchange insights and strengthen collaborative efforts toward sustainable development.

ICYMI: The National Academy of Science and Technology successfully conducted the fourth episode of this yearโs Kapehan last April 30, 2026, with the theme โRooted in Action: Science-Backed Solutions for a Greener Planet.โ The session was held in celebration of Earth Day, an annual and global event observed every month of April.
Two (2) leading scientists in biochemistry and eco-innovation have shared their knowledge and insights on simple, science-backed techniques that help keep our country green and clean:
โข National Scientist Lourdes J. Cruz, PhD Biochemistry, and one of the pioneers of the Future Earth Philippines Program; and
โข Dr. Maria Obiminda L. Cambaliza, PhD Civil and Environmental Engineering, and 2022 NAST Environmental Science Award (NESA) Winner
Dr. Joseph Q. Basconcillo, 2025 NSTW-Outstanding Research and Development Awardee, served as the moderator for the event.

The National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL) will convene a Focus Group Discussion on Digital Health and AI in Healthcare on 01 June 2026 in the City of Manila.
As part of the NAST PHL Special Concerns Program Technical Working Group on Applications of Advanced Technologies in the Delivery of Health Care Services (TWG 9), led by Academician Jaime C. Montoya, this activity will bring together experts and stakeholders to identify key factors for integrating digital health and AI into Universal Health Care.
The discussion will explore essential areas including policy support, implementation strategies, infrastructure, data privacy, safety, ethics, and capacity building in advancing science and technology-driven solutions toward a more resilient, accessible, and future-ready healthcare system.

The 2026 Mindanao Regional Scientific Meeting (RSM) officially opened on 19 May 2026 at Hotel Oazis in Butuan City, bringing together experts and stakeholders to discuss how science, technology, and innovation (STI) can accelerate progress toward the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Hosted by the National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL) and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Regional Offices in Mindanao, led by DOSTโCaraga, the event carries the theme: โUN SDGs: Science, Technology, and Innovation for Sustainable Development.โ
Acd. Jaime C. Montoya, President of NAST PHL and Chair of the Health Sciences Division, underscored the role of STI in building a resilient and sustainable future, while Department of Science and Technology Secretary Dr. Renato U. Solidum Jr. emphasized the need to transform research into community-based solutions. DOST Undersecretary for Regional Operations Engr. Sancho A. Mabborang also highlighted Mindanao initiatives aligned with the SDGs.
The afternoon plenary sessions focused on soil health and innovations in production, processing, and post-production systems.
Dr. Sailila Abdula, Branch Director of the Philippine Rice Research InstituteโMidsayap Experimental Station, presented PhilRice innovations promoting โsoil intelligenceโ through digital agriculture, nutrient management tools, IoT-based technologies, and regenerative farming practices for sustainable rice production.
Representing Bureau of Soils and Water Management Director IV Dr. Gina P. Nilo, Supervising Agriculturist Mr. Vince Albert P. Ching discussed the National Soil Health Program, highlighting the strengthening of soil laboratories, monitoring systems, and sustainable land management initiatives.
Dr. Emma Ruth V. Bayogan, a retired professor in the Department of Biological Sciences and Environmental Studies at the University of the Philippines Mindanao, emphasized climate-smart agriculture, postharvest innovations, food systems transformation, and sustainable consumer practices as critical strategies for achieving Zero Hunger.
Meanwhile, Dr. Tomas M. Austral Jr., Professor at the Department of Animal Science of Caraga State University, underscored the importance of advanced processing technologies, mechanization, cold storage systems, and AI-driven innovations to reduce agricultural losses and strengthen food value chains.
The discussions highlighted the critical role of STI in advancing sustainable development, setting the stage for continued collaboration and knowledge exchange throughout the 2026 Mindanao RSM.
