It's December! Christmas songs are now filling the malls, streets and every Filipino house. It's just time for us to feature our Pinoy IP for this month, "Kumukutikutitap" by Joey Albert.
Kumukutikutitap is a 1980s hit song by Joey Albert, composed by National Artist for Music, Ryan Cayabyab. The song was originally composed to be used by a choir to be a contest piece. Since it wasn't used due to unfortunate events in 1983, the song was given to the Singers' Foundation for their Christmas caroling fund-raising activity. Kumukutikutitap was also cited as one of the ten most enduring Christmas songs in the Philippines by critic Ruel Mendoza.
Joey Albert is an award-winning Filipino pop star who boasts of more than 20 studio albums. She was the first Filipino artist to record on CD and also received the Best Female Vocalist trophy during the 1985 Cecil Awards. She also won the Best foreign-based Filipino Performer during the 2019 Aliw Awards. She is now living her life as a daycare teacher and a three-time cancer survivor in Canada.
"Kumukutikutitap" has undoubtedly become one of the most familiar OPM Christmas tunes and is still protected by copyright.
What do you think the song refers to as "kumukutikutitap, bumubusibusilak"? Share your answers in the comment section!
