Circular Economy Program

05/06/2026

This June 5, the DOST Circular Economy Program joins the celebration of World Environment Day 2026, reminding us that the power to protect our planet starts with the choices we make every day.

One powerful way to care for the Earth is by embracing a circular economy—reducing waste, using resources more efficiently, and keeping materials in use for as long as possible. Through science, technology, and innovation, we can create solutions that benefit both people and the planet.

☑ Mas mababang smoke at particulate emissions

Together with Dost II Psto Nueva Vizcaya, The Advancing Capacity and Collaboration to Equip, Lead, and Enable Readiness, Adoption, Transition and Ex*****on towards Circular Economy (ACCELERATE-CE) training program officially commenced in Nueva Vizcaya, bringing together stakeholders from local government units, MSMEs, academe, and partner institutions to strengthen their understanding of the circular economy and their role in advancing the transition towards a more sustainable future.

Day 1 focused on building a common foundation for circularity through discussions on Circular Economy Concepts and Principles, the Need for Multi-Sectoral Collaboration for Circularity, and the Circular Roles of LGUs, MSMEs, Academe, and DOST. Participants also took part in Workshop 1: Ways of the Waste – Waste Stream Mapping, where they explored local waste flows.

Sama-sama nating i-ACCELERATE ang circular transition—through collaboration, innovation, and action.

"The Philippines holds one of the highest forms of reverence for its national flag, retiring worn-out flags through solemn burning ceremonies. Under Republic Act No. 8491, or the Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines, worn-out or damaged flags must not be casually discarded. Instead, they must be “solemnly burned” to prevent misuse or desecration, with the ashes subsequently collected and buried.

While the ritual embodies patriotism and respect, science now suggests that the practice may also carry unintended environmental consequences.

DOST-PTRI believes the solution may already exist within the country’s own textile science innovations.

“Very specific in that amendment na sana maconsider na hindi lang po necessarily pagsusunog yung marangal na paraan, bagkus we would want na kapag hindi na mare-recognize yung ating bandila sa kaniyang natural na porma ay pwede na po itong ikonsidera at lumayo tayo roon sa pamamaraan ng pagsusunog.” DOST-PTRI Director, Dr. Julius Leaño Jr. shared."
