"For you, a thousand times over."
Every time someone asks me for recommendations, this book always makes the list. Although I vaguely remember why I read it in the first place (I think it was for a book review back in college), the emotional weight of the story remains etched in my memory.
I wont give you a synopsis, but I will tell you that this is not for the faint-hearted. Deeply empathic people may need to pause every now and then.
It can trigger guilt, sadness, resentment, but still, I recommend it now more than ever.
Here are some lessons I remember from it: First, nobody wins in a war, and it's the vulnerable - the children, the marginalized families, that pay the most terrible price.
Second, unless good people choose to protect those who are weak and vulnerable, bullies will continue to abuse.
Third, bullies are not born bullies. They are children (and more often today, adults) who aren't properly guided, understood, or held accountable. Teach children to be kind.
Fourth, it reinforces what psychology keeps telling us - childhood trauma cuts deep, and it shapes our adult lives.
Fifth, our past will always catch up to us, but it is never too late to take accountability, to make things right.
Lastly, for you, a thousand times over.
