No More Basins, No More Leaks: A New Chapter for Kabuyao Elementary School
Teachers and learners of Kabuyao Elementary School are now enjoying safer, more secure, and more conducive learning spaces following the completion of the "Safe and Better Classroom" Roofing Rehabilitation Project, generously funded by the BMW Owners Society of Saferiders (BOSS) Club of the Philippines.
For many years, the school faced a persistent challenge of deteriorating classroom roofs that caused leaks during typhoons and periods of heavy rainfall. The condition disrupted classes and forced teachers and learners to place basins and pails inside classrooms to collect rainwater, preventing damage to classroom floors, furniture, instructional materials, and other learning resources.
Despite the school's continuous efforts to address the problem through its Maintenance and Other Operating Expenses (MOOE), only portions of the damaged roofing could be repaired. While one section would be restored, new leaks would eventually appear in other areas during succeeding heavy rains. The recurring problem persisted due to the extensive deterioration of the roofing system and the school's limited financial resources.
The successful implementation of the project was made possible through a shared commitment among stakeholders. The BMW Owners Society of Saferiders (BOSS) Club of the Philippines provided all construction materials required for the roofing rehabilitation, as well as meals for the workers throughout the implementation period. Meanwhile, Kabuyao Elementary School utilized its MOOE to cover the labor cost of skilled workers, while parents and community volunteers generously rendered free labor for basic construction and support activities, exemplifying the spirit of bayanihan and community partnership.
The project was further supported by the PCOM Baguio-Benguet Chapter, which donated the gutters during Brigada Eskwela, prior to the implementation of the roofing rehabilitation. However, the gutters could not be installed at that time because the proposed roofing rehabilitation project was still undergoing the approval process. To ensure proper coordination and avoid rework, the installation of the donated gutters was deferred until the roofing rehabilitation was completed. The gutters were subsequently installed, providing an improved drainage system and additional protection to the rehabilitated classrooms.
The project's completion proved especially timely. The rehabilitated classrooms were formally turned over to Kabuyao Elementary School on the last day of July 2026. Just two days later, the place experienced continuous rainfall brought about by successive typhoons. Unlike in previous years, the newly rehabilitated roof effectively protected the classrooms from rainwater, keeping learning spaces dry, safe, and secure throughout the prolonged period of heavy rainfall.
Although face-to-face classes have been suspended because of the prevailing weather conditions, teachers have expressed confidence and peace of mind knowing that instructional materials, classroom equipment, furniture, and other valuable school property remain protected from water damage. The immediate benefit of the project became evident as the improved facility withstood the continuous rains, preserving school resources and ensuring that classrooms will be ready for learners once classes resume.
Beyond addressing a long-standing infrastructure concern, the project reflects the power of collaboration among the education sector, private stakeholders, and the local community in promoting safe and quality learning environments. Through the generosity and unwavering commitment of the BMW Owners Society of Saferiders (BOSS) Club of the Philippines, the support of the PCOM Baguio-Benguet Chapter through its donation of gutters, and the invaluable contributions of parents, community volunteers, and the school through its MOOE, Kabuyao Elementary School has overcome a challenge that had affected generations of learners and teachers. This collective effort demonstrates the spirit of bayanihan and the significant impact that strong partnerships can have in creating safer, more conducive, and sustainable learning spaces for learners.
The successful completion of the "Safe and Better Classroom" Roofing Rehabilitation Project stands as a testament to what can be achieved through strong partnerships, shared responsibility, and community cooperation. By investing in safe, resilient, and learner-friendly school facilities, the project has created a lasting impact that will benefit both present and future generations of Kabuyao Elementary School learners.
