[MUNTINLUPA CITY, 01 December 2025]—The Philippines, through the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), is hosting the Science Diplomacy Workshop for Young Researchers and Policymakers in the ASEAN Region from 1–2 December 2025. Co-organized with the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF), the regional workshop brings together emerging science and policy leaders from the ASEAN Member States, represented by a researcher and a policymaker. The event features expert presentations and engagements from distinguished speakers representing ASEF, ASEAN Secretariat, DOST, UNESCO Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development, British Embassy in Manila, ASEAN Science Diplomats, Balik Scientist, and other international partners—highlighting the critical role of science diplomacy in addressing transboundary and complex global challenges. Participants will also engage in hands-on case studies, simulation exercises, and collaborative problem-solving designed to strengthen practical skills in linking scientific evidence to policy formulation and regional cooperation.
The workshop was formally opened by DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum, Jr, who emphasized the collective responsibility of ASEAN Member States to advance science-based collaboration for sustainable development. The challenges we face today-climate change, pandemics, food security-- do not recognize national borders. Addressing them requires solutions grounded in science, guided by evidence, and strengthened through diplomacy, he said. “Let this workshop ignite a shared commitment to advancing science diplomacy—where collaboration goes beyond borders, and where science and policy work hand in hand to shape solutions that secure a resilient and sustainable future for ASEAN.”
The workshop aims to equip participants with a solid understanding of science diplomacy and its application to research, technology, and innovation; expand their ASEAN networks among researchers, science administrators, and policymakers; and enable them to translate learning into practice—initiating or joining international research partnerships, advising on science-informed policy, or leading collaborative innovation projects. It will also promote active engagement at policy–diplomacy interfaces to advance evidence-based decision-making and produce at least one actionable proposal for regional scientific cooperation.
