This marks the second year that Valderrama has participated in the Dulungan Count, once again taking us deep into the forest of Sitio Buho, Brgy. San Agustin, Valderrama, Antique.
Last year, our team recorded one Dulungan sighting, along with several other bird and wildlife species. This year, after a challenging 2โ3-hour hike from the barangay proper through steep and rugged trails to Sitio Buho, our efforts were rewarded with an even more remarkable encounter:

Two of the Dulungan, believed to be a pair, a male and female - were spotted perched high on a tree branch directly above the literal โBuhoโ cave in Sitio Buho. Another Dulungan was sighted along the trail leading toward Mt. Baloy, a sighting that was also documented by a local mountaineering guide.
Indeed, the long and strenuous trek was more than worth it. The sightings remind us that the forests of Valderrama continue to shelter some of our countryโs most precious and threatened wildlife - and that our collective efforts to protect these habitats truly matter.
MENRO Valderrama, EnP. B**g Rivero III and staff, extends its heartfelt gratitude to our dear Local Chief Executive, ๐๐๐๐. ๐๐ผ๐ฐ๐ฒ๐น๐๐ป ๐. ๐ฃ๐ผ๐๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ฎ๐, for her unwavering support and encouragement for environmental conservation initiatives, and to Hon. Keizl Mae Valenzuela Pugarin, SB Chairperson on Environment and Natural Resources, for her continued support and advocacy for the protection and conservation of Valderramaโs rich biodiversity and natural resources.
Our sincere appreciation also goes to the CENRO-Belison and the Office of the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer (OPENRO) for augmenting and strengthening our team during the activity. A special thank you to the ever-amiable and hospitable people of Brgy. San Agustin, headed by Punong Barangay ๐๐ผ๐ป. ๐๐ป๐ด๐ฒ๐น๐ถ๐๐ผ ๐๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ผ๐ฏ๐ผ, together with the Barangay Kagawads and Tanods, for warmly welcoming and assisting us, as always.
We are equally grateful to our valued partner organizations and NGAs - Haribon Foundation, Philippines Biodiversity Conservation Foundation, Inc. (PBCFI) - PhilBio, Conservation International Philippines Foundation, Inc. - TRANSCEND for their continued partnership, technical support, and commitment to biodiversity conservation.
The Dulungan is more than just a bird. It is a symbol of the health and richness of our forests, and a reminder that when we protect our forests, we protect life itself.
