MUSEUMS MONTH LECTURE

Museums as Cultural Bridges: Vienna and Manila
Dr. Johann Stockinger, University of Vienna
Museo ni Dr Pio Valezuela, Pariancillo Villa, Valenzuela City
26 October 2026, Monday, 1:30 PM

This lecture explores how museums function as vital agents of cultural diplomacy, bridging Austria and the Philippines. Centered on the historic 19th-century friendship between Dr. Josรฉ Rizal and Austrian ethnographer Ferdinand Blumentritt, the presentation examines the recent transfer of newly discovered artifactsโ€”including an unpublished Rizal letter and Juan Luna watercolorsโ€”from private collections in Austria to the National Museum of the Philippines. By analyzing the journey of these objects from personal heirlooms to shared public heritage, the lecture demonstrates how museums actively revitalize the enduring 80-year Austro-Philippine diplomatic relationship.

Johann Stockinger, Ph.D. is an Austrian social anthropologist and interdisciplinary researcher whose academic work encompasses social anthropology, ethnology, formal logic, science studies, computer science, and Asian-Pacific studies. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Vienna, where he graduated with honors, specializing in Social Anthropology and Formal Logic. Between 1992 and 1995, he conducted field research in the Philippines in coordination with the National Museum of the Philippines. Since 1995, his research has focused particularly on the historical and cultural relations between Austria and the Philippines. His work has included extensive research on Josรฉ Rizal and Ferdinand Blumentritt, as well as the historical connections between Austria and the Philippines. In the course of this research, he discovered three original letters written by Josรฉ Rizal. He is also the author of a three-volume biography of Ferdinand Blumentritt, with an English-language edition currently in preparation. Now retired, he continues his independent research and scholarly work on Austrianโ€“Philippine relations, Josรฉ Rizal, Ferdinand Blumentritt, and Asian-Pacific studies.

Organized by the Museo Ni Dr. Pio Valenzuela in collaboration with the Philippine Historical Association and Austrian Embassy Manila in celebration of the Museums Month and 80th anniversary of Austria-Philippines Diplomatic Relations.
