Guests from the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Estrellas de Zamboanga Chapter, the Supreme Student Council Society of the Philippines – Zamboanga City Chapter, and various Naval Reserve Officers' Training Corps (NROTC) units were given the opportunity to interact with sailors and learn more about the Navy’s mission, values, and contributions to nation-building.

Participating NROTC units included the 613th NROTC Unit (AFF), 632nd NROTC Unit (MSU Tawi-Tawi), 613th NROTC Unit (MIT), 610th NROTC Unit (ZPPSU-Siay), 628th NROTC Unit (Iligan City), 677th NROTC Unit (JRMSU Dapitan), 610th NROTC Unit (ZPPSU Main), 627th NROTC Unit (Universidad de Zamboanga), 627th NROTC Unit (ZSCMST), 677th NROTC Unit (Siocon), and 612th NROTC Unit (NDJC).

Complementing the Open Ship Tour, personnel of the 1st Boat Attack Division conducted a coastal cleanup activity at Naval Station Romulo Espaldon on 23 May 2026. PHILIPPINE NAVY INTERCEPTS TWO MARITIME SMUGGLING OPERATIONS IN BASILAN AND SULU; OVER PHP 113 MILLION WORTH OF ILLICIT CI******ES SEIZED

Bagong Calarian, Zamboanga City β€” The Philippine Navy, through the Western Mindanao Naval Command (WMNC) and Naval Task Force 61, successfully intercepted two separate maritime smuggling operations off Basilan and Sulu on 23 and 24 May 2026, resulting in the seizure of more than PHP 113 million worth of undocumented foreign-brand ci******es.

The first operation was conducted on 23 May 2026 off Tongquil Island, Sulu, where naval operating units intercepted FB SEA DRAGON (per marking) and MPB SEA HORSE (per documents). Aboard the vessel were approximately 282 master cases of undocumented ci******es with an estimated value of PHP 42.7 million.

A day later, on 24 May 2026, another successful interdiction was carried out near Sibago Island, Hadji Mohammad Ajul, Basilan, leading to the apprehension of M/B LAPPAS. The vessel was found transporting around 473 master cases of undocumented ci******es valued at approximately PHP 70.9 million.

Naval personnel immediately conducted boarding, inspection, and verification procedures which confirmed that the cargoes lacked the necessary legal documents and permits. The apprehended crew members failed to present proof of lawful transport and possession of the cargoes, prompting the apprehension of the vessels and their personnel for violation of Republic Act No. 12022 or the Anti-Agricultural Economic Sabotage Act.

All apprehended individuals were properly processed, medically examined, and informed of their constitutional rights in accordance with existing operational and legal procedures.

The seized vessels and illicit cargoes were subsequently transported to Naval Station Romulo Espaldon, Zamboanga City, for inventory and documentation prior to turnover to the Bureau of Customs, Port of Zamboanga, for appropriate disposition.

These successful operations highlight the sustained maritime security and anti-smuggling efforts of WMNC in safeguarding the maritime approaches of Western Mindanao. The Philippine Navy remains committed to intensifying maritime patrol and interdiction operations in support of national security, economic protection, and the government’s campaign against transnational and illegal maritime activities.
