AWAM Pakistan convened its Bi-Monthly Follow-up Meeting of Minority Rights Defender Forum (MRDF) on 2 May 2026 at Chiniot Palace, Faisalabad under the theme “Promoting Religious Freedom – Encouraging Inclusive Governance” as part of the Asia Action for Freedom of Religion or Belief initiative, implemented in partnership with Minority Rights Group (MRG) and funded by the European Union.

The session brought together academics, legal experts, civil society representatives, media and social mobilisers to discuss structural barriers faced by religious minorities in accessing civic registration and constitutional rights in Pakistan. Participants including Prof. Rizwan ullah Kokab, Dr. Unsa Jamshed, Dr. Musaddak, Pastor Ashraf, and Arif Gill highlighted issues including discrimination in registration processes, outdated legal frameworks, economic barriers, lack of representation, and the need for inclusive governance mechanisms.

The meeting concluded with a collective commitment to strengthen advocacy on minority rights, document civic registration challenges, engage academic institutions for awareness initiatives, and support minority communities in accessing governmental complaint mechanisms.

Awam Pakistan, alongside Aman Rang and the Awami Workers Party, marks this day by demanding labor rights and honoring the struggle, sacrifice, and dignity of every worker.

We remind everyone of the tireless efforts of our labor force and call for a healthy, psychosocially safe working environment in line with ILO conventions.

We demand:
1. Registration of all laborers under PESSI — including informal sector workers
2. Access to social protection schemes for every worker, no exceptions

We discussed how government social protection schemes are powerful tools introduced to uplift marginalized communities but access starts with being registered. For minority youth, a CNIC or birth certificate is the gateway to:
School enrollment & scholarships, Property & ownership rights, Legal marriage registration social welfare & protection programs
Without civic registration, our community remains invisible to the systems meant to serve us. Together, we can change that one registration at a time.

The Punjab Assembly has officially passed the Punjab Child Marriage Restraint Act 2026, on 27th April, 2026, marking a definitive end to gender-based age disparities in marriage.

By setting the legal marriage age to 18 years for both males and females, Punjab is leading the way in modernizing our social fabric and ensuring that every child has the right to grow, learn, and thrive before taking on adult responsibilities.

What’s changing?
1. Equality: Minimum age is now 18 for everyone—no exceptions.
2. Stronger Deterrence: Heavy fines and rigorous imprisonment for those who perform, facilitate, or promote child marriages.
3. Enhanced Protection: New, strict penalties for child abuse and child trafficking linked to underage marriage.
4. Swift Justice: Cases will be handled by the Court of Sessions and must be concluded within 90 days.

This isn't just a law; it’s a commitment to our youth, their health, and their future. We applaud the Punjab Assembly for this bold step toward a more equitable and safe society. Now, this landmark legislation must be implemented in its full spirit — with zero tolerance and unwavering resolve — so that its promise translates into real protection for every child across Punjab.

AWAM conducted a structured dialogue session under the Youth Saanjh Bethak framework, bringing together students, and community leaders to critically examine the systemic challenges faced by religious and ethnic minorities in Faisalabad.
Through facilitated dialogue, the youth deconstructed their own internalized prejudices and misconceptions related to marginalized communities, identified root causes of intolerance, and built tools to counter hate narratives both online and offline.

6th Youth Panchayat

AWAM Pakistan and ISCOS, under the BELIEF Project supported by AICS, jointly organized the Final 6th Youth Panchayat on 13th April 2026 in Islamabad. Centered on the theme "No Longer on the Margins: Youth Reclaiming Citizenship and Belonging," the event brought together minority and majority youth, activists, and experts to promote inclusive interfaith dialogue.

The event was structured around three panel discussions:

Panel I — Minority Community: The first panel comprised Sharoon Javed, Kiran Peter, Christopher Sharaf, Harmeet Singh, and Sehrish, who shared their lived experiences and concerns regarding the exercise of equal rights and their recognition as equal citizens in Pakistan.

Panel II — Majority Community: The second panel comprised Imtiaz Ali, Zeeshan Naqvi, Dr. Faisal Abbas, Izzat Kamal Pasha, and Arwa Mudassar, who shared their perspectives on social acceptance of diversity, particularly in the context of religious pluralism.

Panel III — Experts: The third panel comprised Asia Nasir, Former Member of National Assembly; Rabia Razzaque, Senior Programme Manager at ILO; Dileep Doshi, Advocate; Abdur Rehman Hur Bajwa, Member of the Islamabad Bar Council; and Fahad Barlas, Vice President of the Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The panel wrapped up the session by reflecting on the day's discussions, offering a way forward and practical recommendations to engage grassroots communities in promoting inclusive governance.
