📍 Federal Directorate of Immunization , The Expanded Programme on Immunization - Pakistan in collaboration with UNICEF Pakistan has commenced a three-day Training of Vaccinators and Waste Management Committee Members in Islamabad (Environmental & Social Management Plan (ESMP).

Dr. Musa Khan, DG FDI chaired the meeting and in his opening remarks stated that “the implementation of the Environmental & Social Management Plan is not only a professional responsibility but also a legal obligation. The installation of eco-friendly medical waste shredders at 96 sites marks a significant milestone in ensuring safer immunization services, protecting communities from health risks, and reducing environmental pollution.

I encourage all participants to demonstrate ownership, professionalism, and commitment in adopting sustainable healthcare waste management practices. Together, we can build a model system that safeguards public health while contributing to a cleaner and greener Pakistan.”

The training that was technically led by Dr. Muhammad Ibrahim Mughal, National Coordinator, (Environmental Health) UNICEF brings together vaccinators and Waste Management Committee members to strengthen capacities in infection prevention, healthcare waste management, environmental compliance, waste auditing, cold chain management, and the sustainable disposal of immunization waste.

As part of FDI’s commitment to safe and environmentally responsible immunization services, eco-friendly medical waste shredders have been installed at 96 sites across Pakistan, including Federating Areas. These shredders ensure the safe disinfection and destruction of used syringes and immunization-related waste at the point of generation, helping prevent reuse, needle-stick injuries, and environmental contamination.

The initiative also promotes recycling through certified partners, supporting resource recovery, environmental sustainability, and long-term financial sustainability of the waste management system. This intervention contributes directly to SDG 13: Climate Action and reflects Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening public health while protecting the environment.

For every mother, timely knowledge and support can make all the difference in seeking care. Still, almost 11,000 women die due to pregnancy and childbirth related causes every year in Pakistan.

In South Punjab, the UNICEF Mothers Matter programme, delivered in partnership with Haleon, is helping turn awareness into lifesaving action by strengthening maternal health literacy, training trusted Lady Health Workers, and supporting families to recognize danger signs, prepare for emergencies, and access care in time.

By connecting communities with trusted information and stronger health services, the programme is helping save lives and keep mothers and babies safe and thriving.
