Planning Commission seeks proposal of Digital Radio Migration Plan in one-go

First batch of PBC engineers completes training on DRM Technology.

ISLAMABAD, March 13: The competent forum of Planning Commission of Pakistan, relating to mass media giving a green signal to Digital Radio Migration Plan has directed the concerned authorities to submit the overall digitization project for consideration and approval in a single go instead of phases.
This was stated by Director Engineering, PBC Kamran Saeed at the concluding ceremony of five day workshop on “Digital Radio Migration Plan” at Pakistan Broadcasting Academy today.
He informed the audience that the plan is to be executed at a total estimated cost of 4129.882 million rupees over the next five to seven years.
Kamran Saeed along with two DRM certified and foreign qualified PBC Engineers Ghulam Mujadid and Yasir Mustafa is spearheading the entire planning for the proposed Digital Radio Migration Policy under the direct supervision of Director General, Radio Pakistan Ambreen Jan.
Ghulam Mujadid and Yasir Mustafa, Engineering Managers of PBC who conducted four sessions each of the workshop have recently received expert level training from Germany on DRM transmission system and as the second part of training; they will soon be proceeding to USA.
Kamran said the first ever workshop on the subject has attracted wide coverage in the national electronic and print media, sensitizing the people who matter to play their role in early approval and exestuation of the DRM plan.
He said Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Information & Broadcasting Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan has sought details about the one thousand kilowatt Digital Transmitting station to be established at Fort Monroe in district Dera Ghazi Khan to take up the matter with Chief Minister Punjab about early acquisition of land for the project.
Addressing the ceremony as chief guest Director Administration, PBC Mahmood-ul-Hassan Akhtar expressed the determination to materialize Prime Minister’s Imran Khan Vision of promoting digitization in the country in each and every sector including Radio Pakistan to meet the upcoming challenges in the broadcasting arena. He hoped that all the concerned forums and top authorities would help expedite approval and ex*****on of digital radio migration policy with early provision of required funds
He said proposed digital transmission would not only help improve the sound quality of radio Pakistan but would also be cost effective.
Mahmood-ul-Hassan hoped that the first batch of PBC engineers from all over the country who attended the workshop on DRM policy would serve as torch bearers for implementation of the digitization project.
Earlier, addressing the participants Principal Pakistan Broadcasting Academy, Muhammad Tariq Chaudhry said PBA would be forthcoming if the higher authorities ask for a series of workshops on digital radio migration policy to impart training to all the PBC professionals covering different aspects of the plan and digital technology. He thanked PBC authorities for extending full support to PBA for smooth conduct of the week-long workshop.
Later, souvenirs were awarded to the distinguished guests and the Executives of sponsors of the workshop including HEDRA Technology and Element99Solutions, while certificates were given to the participants.
About thirty engineering professionals from Radio Pakistan and private sector attended the workshop.

Govt plans to fully digitize PBC
South Punjab to have 1,000-KW transmitter

ISLAMABAD, March 11: The government of Prime Minister Imran Khan, under its vision of introducing modern trends and technology in different sectors, has planned to fully digitize the state-owned Radio Pakistan bringing about a revolution in the field of broadcasting in the country, and to capture the audience at home and abroad including South Asia and Central Asia and the Middle East through quality news, current affairs and programs.

This information has been revealed in official documents during the ongoing week long national workshop on Digital Radio Migration policy of Radio Pakistan at Pakistan Broadcasting Academy, Islamabad.

Under the plan, the biggest 1000-Kilowatt DRM Medium-wave transmitting station of Radio Pakistan will be set up at Fort Monroe hill station in Dera Ghazi Khan district in South Punjab at an estimated cost of three billion rupees. It will be the first ever most powerful but digital transmitter of Radio Pakistan that is to be established in center of the country as part of Phase-II of Digital Radio Migration policy and it will help cover the entire population of Pakistan with crystal clear and noise-free waves.

The concerned government authorities are in the process to engage the international donors to execute the gigantic project.

With this powerful digital transmitter, Radio Pakistan would also have the capacity to reach out all the strategic destinations like India, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Iran, China, Center Asia and the Middle East.

It may be mentioned here that India has already installed two 1,000-kilowatt digital transmitters in addition to several different capacity digital transmitters along Pakistan’s border areas and Pakistan direly needed such an initiative to have compatibility with its arch rivals.

The project has already been approved by the federal cabinet while the Punjab government has been asked to acquire land for the said purpose.

District Dera Ghazi Khan is situated at a triangular connecting three provinces of Pakistan including Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan. The project would be a great gift for the people of South Punjab as it would help create lot of job opportunities for the locals, removing their sense of deprivation.

Under Phase-II of DRM plan, five DRM+FM transmitters of 10-kilowatt each will be installed in Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Faisalabad and Multan in the existing Radio Stations.

Besides, eight DRM+FM transmitters of five kilowatt each will be installed in Quetta, Peshawar, Gilgit, Skardu, Gwadar, Mirpur(Azad Kashmir), Khairpur and Narowal in the existing Radio stations.

The phase-II of the plan would be accomplished in three years with an overall estimated cost of 3,153 million rupees.

And under Phase-III of the plan, four DRM medium wave transmitters of 100-kilowatt each will be installed in Lahore, Skardu, Quetta and Peshawar for strategic purposes. Completion of phase-III in two years will cost an estimated 800 million rupees.

It is worthwhile to mention here that work on Phase-I of the DRM plan is already in progress under which the existing 400-kilowatt DRM-enabled Medium Wave transmitter at Peshawar and 100 KW DRM – enabled Medium Wave transmitter at Dera Ismail Khan will be upgraded for operation on simulcast mode as well as pure digital mode at an estimated cost of 176.882 million rupees.

Islamabad, March 09: A week long national workshop on “Digital Radio Migration” (DRM) plan began at Pakistan Broadcasting Academy today. Over-thirty engineering professionals of Radio Pakistan and private sector are attending the workshop.

Addressing the participants on opening day of the workshop, Director General, Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation, Ambreen Jan said Ministry of Information & Broadcasting and Radio Pakistan’s top management are making hectic efforts to execute Digital Radio Migration Plan in three phases to switch over to digital technology from the existing obsolete analog approach.

She said the management is determined to take timely measures to infuse a new life in the production and presentation of news and programmes of the State Broadcaster by shifting over to modern digital transmission system, having crystal clear sound quality without noise and distortion with cost effectiveness.

Ambreen Jan said Digital Radio Migration (DRM) policy for Radio Pakistan has already been approved by its Board of Directors in January this year while PBC engineers had successfully conducted the trial of DRM, FM-transmission at National Broadcasting House, Islamabad.

She said the PC-1 of the DRM plan has been prepared at a cost of 176.882 million rupees and submitted to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting for its approval by the competent forum of Planning Commission.

Director Engineering, PBC, Kamran Saeed informed the participants that as per pilot project, the existing digital-enabled 400 KW medium wave transmitter Peshawar and 100 KW medium wave transmitter D.I.Khan will be upgraded to operate on simulcast (analaog+digital) mode as well as pure digital mode. The stipulated time period for completion of pilot project is two years.

He said as part of digitization policy, PC-1 of another plan is being prepared under which twenty broadcasting houses of Radio Pakistan have been selected to digitize their Master Control Rooms (MCRs) and forty-five news and programme studios.

Speaking of the occasion Chief Executive Officer, HEDRA Technology, Roman Afroz Butt appreciated the efforts of Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and PBC management for the proposed Digital Radio Migration Plan. He hoped it would help the state broadcaster to meet the technological and strategic challenges in a befitting manner.

Foreign qualified and DRM certified PBC Instructors, Engr. Ghulam Mujaddid and Engr. Yasir Mustafa, covered the opening topic of Introduction of Digital Radio Migration in two sessions today.

In his welcome address Principal, PBA, Muhammad Tariq Chaudhry, welcomed the honourable guests and the participants of the first ever national workshop on DRM Technology.

Earlier, Principal PBA and the staff warmly welcomed the Director General, PBC Ambreen Jan on her arrival at the campus and presented a bunch of flowers.

WEEK LONG WORKSHOP ON DRM PLAN BEGINS AT PBA TOMORROW, (MONDAY MARCH 9, 2020)

Islamabad, March 08: A week long national workshop on “Digital Radio Migration” (DRM) plan begins at Pakistan Broadcasting Academy tomorrow. (Monday, March 9, 2020)
Director General, PBC Ambreen Jan will be chief guest at the opening ceremony of the workshop.
Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Information & Broadcasting, Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan is likely to be the chief guest at the closing ceremony of the workshop on Friday.
Main objective of the workshop is to impart training to PBC Engineering professionals enabling them to switch over to modern Digital Transmission System from the existing obsolete Analog Technology.
Modern digital transmission system, have salient features like Crystal-clear, sound quality, without any noise or distortion, simultaneous transmission of 4 programs on 1 transmitter, thus saving the cost of 03 transmitters while Digital radio is cost-effective and energy-efficient, consuming about 40% lesser electricity than analogue radio.
PBC’s DRM foreign qualified experts Engr. Ghulam Mujadid & Engr. Yasir Mustafa will conduct four sessions each of the workshop.
Director Engineering, PBC Kamran Saeed will deliver a special lecture on the subject on the concluding day of the workshop on March 13, 2020.
Deputy Controllers/Engineering Managers and other young engineering professionals of private sector from across the country will participate in the workshop.
The Digital Radio Migration Policy for Radio Pakistan has already been approved by its Board of Directors in January this year.
PBC engineers had successfully conducted the trial of digital DRM FM transmission in October last year in Islamabad. The trial was acknowledged by the DRM Consortium England and Radio World USA.
The Digital Migration Plan in PBC will be executed in three phases. The PC-1 of the Pilot Project has been prepared at a cost of Rs. 176.882 million and submitted to Ministry of Information & Broadcasting for its approval by the competent forum of Planning Commission.
As per Pilot Project, the existing, digital-enabled 400 KW medium wave transmitter Peshawar and 100 KW medium wave transmitter D.I. Khan will be upgraded to operate on simulcast (analogue + digital) mode as well as pure digital mode. The stipulated time period for completion of Pilot Project is two years.
